DVD Review: High Lonesome (1950)

There are few names that are more synonymous with Hollywood than that of Barrymoore. From Lionel Barrymoore, Ethel, John and even to Drew Barrymore. You would be hard pressed to find a family of actors that held more weight than that of Barrymore.

In 1950 John Drew Barrymore the son of the legendary John Barrymore, under the name John Barrymore Jr. took a journey to the old west in the films High Lonesome. He was joined by a western legends Chill Wills and Jack Elam. Now Reel Vault has released this film on DVD.

At a Texas ranch, a young man nicknamed Cooncat (John Barrymore Jr.) tells rancher Horse Davis (Basil Ruysdael) a story about a murder at a nearby trading post. His descriptions of the men he believes committed the crime, Smiling Man (Jack Elam) and Roper (Dave Kashner), fit those of two members of a rival family who were killed during a land fight years earlier. Another shooting draws Horse's future son-in-law, Pat Farrell (John Archer), into the mystery.

In the 1950s westerns were all the rage. Fans fans couldn't get enough of them and they didn't have to be The Searchers or Shane to bring the entertainment. High Lonesome brings the entertainment. The acting is great and the action is good. The story is a great one. I truly enjoyed watching this film!

Now Reel Vault has transferred this film to DVD in it's original full screen format and the audio is 2.0 mono. On the DVD the film looks really nice. The colors are bright and the picture crisp and clean. There is no signs of damage to this print. The audio is clear with no hiss or pops. This is a great transfer.

Now for bonus features. Sadly there are none. It would have been nice see a trailer or a commentary. But I can't lie the quality of this print is probably better than what you are going to find online.

This is the second John Barrymore Jr. film to see a DVD release from Reel Vault. The first being The Sundowners. I am so glad to get to add both of this films to my collection thanks to the good folks at Reel Vault.
