Blu-ray Review: I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955)

Biopics are one of my favorite type of films. I don't know how many of these type of films I have in my collection. I enjoy see the life and times of famous people playout out on my TV screen in full dramatic detail.

In 1955 the tragic life of Broadway star Lillian Roth was brought to the silver screen starring Susan Hayward. Now for the first time ever this film I'll Cry Tomorrow is coming to Blu-ray thanks to Warner Archive Collection.

Deprived of a childhood by her mother (Jo Van Fleet, East of Eden) by the age of 20 Lillian Roth (Susan Hayward, I want to Live!) had risen to fame on Broadway and in Hollywood. But success does not equal happiness. She finds this out the hard way when her fiancé dies. She finds herself in a downward spiral of alcoholism and a string of bad marriages. With her career in shambles and Lillian destitute she is determined to return to the spotlight.

Susan Hayward is simply amazing as Lillian Roth. No wonder she garnered a Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. It is such a well deserved nomination. The supporting cast is just as good we see performances by Richard Conte (Cry of the City), Eddie Albert (Green Acres) and Margo (Lost Horizon) just to name a few.

The film runs at 2 hours but the story is such an engaging drama that it doesn't even seem that long at all. You find yourself so entrenched in the story of Lillian Roth that before you know it you are at the end.

I'll Cry Tomorrow arrives on Blu-ray from a new 4K scan of the original Camera negative. The The film is presented in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I have to say this new 4K scan is truly a thing of beauty. There is no signs of compression artifacts. It is also free of any signs of debris or dirt. The audio is very nice with little is any signs of hiss or pops. Warner Archive really put the work into this release and I am glad to say it was worth it! But a stunning 4K transfer is not all that is included here. Warner Archive added some cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

* Vintage Lillian Roth Musical Short Story Conference

* 3 Excerpts from the MGM Parade TV Series

* Vintage Newsreel Excerpts covering the Movie's Premiere and Accolades

* Theatrical trailer

So as you can see a brand new 4K scan brings new life to this black and white classic and cool bonus feature amp up this release. Now I know not every person loves biopics so this may not be fore everyone, but if you do I'll Cry Tomorrow is one release your need.

So if you love Susan Hayward films, biopics or intense dramas as much as I do I'll Cry Tomorrow is one film you are going to want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
