Long before Harrison Ford was on the run, David Janssen was The Fugitive. As much as I enjoy Harrison's version of Dr. Richard Kimble, David is and always will be The true Dr. Richard Kimble.
During it's final season run of The Fugitive, David Janssen would star in a film where he would play a man trying to clear his name. Only this time the script would be flipped completely. That film was 1967's Warning Shot.
Now the great folks at Kino Lorber under the division of KL Studio Classics are releasing Warning Shot on Blu-ray and as a fan of David Janssen in The Fugitive I could not be more excited.
During a stakeout, an L.A. cop Sargent Tom Valens (David Janssen) kills a doctor who presumably pulled a gun. But the coroner's inquest finds no gun, yet Valens insists their was one. Now forced out by the press, Valens goes on a quest to clear his name.
This film hits very hot topic issues that sadly we still are facing even in 2023. The screenplay by Mann Rubin is adapted from the novel 711 - Officer Needs Help by Whit Masterson. The Cinematography of Joseph Biroc is tremendous. He is best known for his work in the classic It's A Wonderful Life and his Academy Award wining cinematography work in 1974's The Towering Inferno.
The acting in this film is great! The film is led by David Janssen, Ed Begley (Hang 'em High), Stefanie Powers (Hard to Hart), Lillian Gish (The Night of the Hunter), Sam Wanamaker (Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger), Keenan Wynn (The Absent-Minded Professor), Joan Collins (Dynasty), Carroll O'Conner (All In the Family, In The Heat of the Night), Steve Allen (The Tonight Show), Eleanor Parker (The Sound of Music), Walter Pidgeon (Forbidden Planet), George Sanders (All About Eve) and more.
Warning Shot comes to home video on Blu-ray thank to Kino Lorber. The film is presented in 1080p in it's original 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono soundtrack. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The transfer is truly something special. The picture is crisp and clean. The colors are vibrant and the flesh tones are consistent throughout the entirety of the film. Warning shot is a very dialogue heavy film, the audio is clear and the score by Jerry Goldsmith is amazing with no signs of pop or hiss. This is a great looking transfer.
In addition to an amazing transfer, Kino Lorber added some bonus features that you may enjoy checking out of this Blu-ray. Take a look at what is included.
* Audio Commentary: film historians Steve Mitchell and Howard S. Berger
* Kino Trailers: Masquerade, The Thomas Crown Affair, Coogan’s Bluff, File of the Golden Goose, P.J., When Eight Bells Toll, The Ipcress File, Arabesque, The Counterfeit Traitor.
Now while Warning Shot may not be considered among the best thriller films of all time, it is a great time travel thrill ride through the late 1960s. Imprint released this film on Blu-ray late 2022. But if you are looking for this film. Try Kino Lorber's release. They are literally the same disc and transfer and Kino Lorber is cheaper, so you save money! And who doesn't love to do that?!
So if you love 60s cinema or David Janssen I highly recommend Warning Shot! Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
