Father of The Bride (1950) {Warner Archive Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed by Jason Lockard

When you hear Father of The Bride, most movie fans in this generation would think the Steve Martin films, and that is a shame. The original is so much better. Produced in 1950 and starring Hollywood Legends Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor.

For years it was available on home video on VHS and DVD. About 5 years ago Warner Archive Collection released this classic film on Blu-ray. So for the 5 year anniversary of this Blu-ray release, I thought it would be cool to look back at this amazing film.

When Kay Banks (Elizabeth Taylor) announces her engagement to Buckley Dunstan (Don Taylor), her father, Stan (Spencer Tracy), finds himself in sinking in the quicksand of problem after problem trying to get this marriage off the ground. As crazy as things get Stan's wife, Ellie (Joan Bennett), tries to be the voice of reason.

Father of the Bride is not slapstick comedy! It's sophisticated comedy. No wonder AFI listed in #83 of their top 100 years.... 100 laughs. But in the midst of the comedy is real emotion of a love a father has for his daughter. It is a sweet film with a lot of heart and some laughs. The film still
plays well over 70 years later.

Father of the Bride is presented in 1080p but in it's original full screen format 1.37:1 aspect ratio. the picture presentation is sharp and clean there is no real flaws in the print. The audio is in lossless DTS-HD MA 2.0 and sounds crystal clear.

This Warner Archive collection Blu-ray not only has a tremendous looking HD version of this film. There is also Latin, Castilian, French, and Polish soundtracks in Dolby Digital 2.0. And subtitle selections consist of English, French, Spanish, Polish, and Czech. There is also some cool bonus features as well! Take a look at what is included in this release.

* Wedding Bells for Star Elizabeth Taylor: A short newsreel taken at Taylor's wedding to Conrad Hilton, Jr. (no audio)

* President Truman Meets the Father of the Bride: The cast meet, greet and pose for pictures. (no audio)

* Theatrical Trailer

If you want to see Father of The Bride I highly recommend this version. Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor shine and this Blu-ray is the perfect way to witness the brilliance of their performance.
