The Paper (1994) {Retro Blu-ray Review}

Ron Howard went from playing Opie Taylor on the Andy Griffith show, to playing Richie Cunningham in Happy Days. But Ron always loved shooting behind the scenes movies while on the set of those sitcoms. So it was only a matter of time he would enter the world of movie direction.

Some of his greatest films include, Willow, Parent hood, A Beautiful Mind, Splash, Star Wars A Solo Story, and How the Grinch stole Christmas. In 1994 Ron directed Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Randy Quaid and Robert Duvall in the film The Paper. Now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are giving this film a Retro VHS Blu-ray release.

Henry Hackett (Michael Keaton) is an editor at the New York Sun, a tabloid paper facing financial cuts. His pregnant wife, Martha (Marisa Tomei), pleads with him to get a more respectable job so he can spend more time with his family. Hackett is considering an offer from another paper, with fewer hours and higher pay, when he gets his hottest story in years. When this scoop leads to a burst of violence and a conflict with his new boss, Alicia (Glenn Close), he faces a startling moment of truth.

The Paper is a fast-paced screenplay penned by David Koepp and Stephen Koepp. Ron Howard does a tremendous job juggling a great script and a magnificent cast. However it should be noted that this film is rated R, so there is a fair amount of sexual references and a pretty intense profanity. So if those things offend you please be aware.

Mill Creek Entertainment has transferred The Paper in 1080p in 1.85:1. The soundtrack is a dts-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The Paper looks amazing on Blu-ray. But in all honesty there is one spot in the film about a half and hour into the film the audio becomes muffled. Thankfully it doesn't last too long but that is a very notable problem.

Mill Creek Entertainment has made this film part of their Retro line and as I have said many times I love this line of Blu-rays. These slipcovers really are something special. But in this disc they added some very cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

* Between the Lines: Inside the Paper
   A 25 minute feature that includes an interview with director Ron Howard

* Shines for All: Stephen Koepp on The Paper
   An 8 Minute audio interview with movie clips.

* Stop The Presses: David Koepp on The Paper
   A almost 10 minute audio interview with movie clips.

The Paper is a comedy/drama for mature audiences. Now the interior of a newspaper room may or may not be interesting fodder for some film fans. So that is why this is a very niche film. But for those that love this film, this Mill Creek Entertainment Retro Blu-ray is going to be one they will want to add to their collection.

If you love Ron Howard films the retro VHS Blu-ray of The Paper is a must own. Head over to Amazon or Deep Discount and order your copy today
