Review: Island of the Blue Dolphins (1964) Kino Lorber Blu-ray Review

Island of the Blue Dolphins Bluray
Film producers look for amazing books to make amazing movies. In 1960 there was a beloved award winning children’s book, Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell. Just a short 4 years after the initial book release a film adaption was released as well.

Now the good folks at Kino Lorber and Scorpion Releasing are giving this film a chance to shine in high definition on Blu-ray thanks to a brand new 2K scan.

The film follows Karana (Golden Globe winner Celia Kaye) who is forced to flee the island of her birth with the rest of her tribe when hunters threaten the area. She soon realizes that her young brother has been left behind. So she jumps ship and swims back to the island, where the two attempt to survive in solitude against staggering odds.

This is a tremendous family friendly film, based on true life events. There is a little bit of violence and some events and images that may not be suitable for very small children. But the story is a dramatic and inspiring one. You will find yourself on the edge of your seat enjoying the adventures of Karana. After watching this film you will be applauding the human spirit.

James B. Clark did a great job bringing this book to life on the silver screen. Now in addition to Celia Kaye there are some very notable actors in this film including, George Kennedy (Cool Hand Luke), Hal John Norman (Emperor of the North Pole), Carlos Romero (The Professionals) and Martin Garralaga (The Gay Cavalier).

The film has been transferred in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio from a brand new 2K scan. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Looking at the film through this new scan truly is an amazing experience. The colors are stunning and the picture is crisp. It is simply amazing!

The only downside with this release that I found is the lack of bonus features. The only one added to this release is film trailers that include, Island of the Blue Dolphin, Where the Lilies Bloom, C.H.O.M.P.S., PufNStuf, Almost Summer and For those who think young.

Now I would have loved to have seen a insightful audio commentary or maybe a short interview with the legendary Celia Kaye. Though I realize that might be a bit of an issue as she is 80 at the time of this writing and may not feel up to it. So that is totally understandable!

Even though the bonus features are almost non existent, the stunningly gorgeous new 2K scan is so great it makes this release a must own for good family friendly adventures.
So if you love adventure films Island of the Blue Dolphin will be right up your alley. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
