Blu-ray Review: The Oblong Box (1969)

During the Halloween season horror movies are how most of us celebrate. Two of my favorite horror actors to watch is Vincent Price and Christopher Lee. And the stories of Edgar Allan Poe make a great canvas for these actors to paint a horror picture.

In 1969 Vincent Price and Christopher Lee shared the screen for a Edgard Allan Poe story. A tale of the living dead entitled The Oblong Box. Now the good folks at Kino Lorber under the division KL Studio Classics are releasing this film on Blu-ray.

Julian (Vincent Price, The Last Man on Earth) hides his horrendously disfigured brother, Sir Edward Markham (Alister Williamson, The Gorgon), in a tower where he is kept in chains. Anxious for freedom, Edward fakes his death with the aid of an immoral attorney, Trench (Peter Arne, The Moonraker), and a pill that puts him into a catatonic state. But the escape plan takes a treacherous turn when Julian unwittingly buries his brother alive -- and he's later unearthed by grave robbers under the employ of malevolent Dr. Neuhardt (Christopher Lee, The Horror of Dracula).

Edgar Allan Poe wrote some of the most iconic stories of the macabre of all time. His stories have been adapted to films and still continue to be to this day. Now The Oblong Box is considered by many to be in at least the Top 10 of his best stories. So this should be a great film, but this film bares little resemblance to Poe's story. But that doesn't have to be a bad thing!

The Oblong Box starts off slow, but as it goes along it picks up speed. Of course Vincent Price and Christopher Lee are tremendous and director Gordon Hessler constructs a nightmare world that will haunt your dreams.

This KL Studio Classics' reissue of The Oblong Box bring this cult classic horror film on on Blu-ray. The film has been transferred
in 1080p in it's original 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This film looks stunning in HD. But a great looking copy of the film is not all that is included on this Blu-ray. Kino Lorber added some very cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

* Audio Commentary with Film Historian Steve Haberman.
An extremely insightful commentary. A truly recommended listen.

* Annabel Lee: A ten minute film featuring Vincent Price reciting Edgar Allan Poe Annabel Lee
A beautiful piece of art on film. Though in all honesty the print is not on the greatest of shape. But I forgive that as it is cool to have this as a bonus feature.

* Theatrical Trailer

Kino Lorber brings Vince Price film fans another Blu-ray movie release that will be a welcomed addition to their horror movie library. This film joins other Poe releases including The Raven, Tales of Terror and The Tomb of Ligeia.
