Classic Cinema+ Remembers Malcolm-Jamal Warner

The sad news was reported yesterday that actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner triadically died in a drowning accident in Cota Rica, on July 20th, 2025, while on vacation with his family. This is horrific news! Warner was only 54 years of age at the time of his passing.

Per ABC News, Warner drowned while swimming after he was caught by a high current. He died of asphyxia near Cocles, a beach in the city of Limon, and his body was identified by Costa Rica’s national police on Sunday.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner is probably best known for his 8 years he spent on the TV show The Cosby Show as Theo Huxtable. After growing up in front of TV audiences Warner would guest star on shows like, A Different World, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Touched by an Angel. 

Just a short 4 years after The Cosby Show ended its run, Warner would join Eddie Griffin for a hilarious buddy sitcom Malcolm and Eddie on UPN. In 2002 he starred alongside Luke Perry in the post-apocalyptic tv series Jeremiah.  

Beyond acting he would direct Nickelodeon shows like "All That" and 'Kenan and Kel". In 2015 Warner won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song "Jesus Children" with Robert Glasper Experiment featuring Lalah Hathaway.

Warner's latest project was the podcast 'Not All Hood'. This podcast explored the experiences and identities of Black Americans.

Andrew Wyatt, a spokesperson for Bill Cosby, 88, tells PEOPLE that his death "reminded him of the same call he received when his son died.”

Malcolm-Jamal Warner's death is a tragedy, but he left behind a legacy of entertainment
people will enjoy for years to come!
