In 1884 Alexandre Dumas penned the classic adventure novel The Three Musketeers. Than as soon as people started making films, filmmakers wanted to make the swashbuckling adventures.
In 1948 MGM brought together an all-star cast including; Lana Turner, Gene Kelly, June Allyson, Van Heflin, Angela Lansbury, Frank Morgan, Vincent Price, Keenan Wynn, John Sutton, Gig Young, Robert Coote, Reginald Owen for an amazing film telling of The Three Musketeers.
Now the good folks at Warner Archive have released a newly restored version of this swashbuckling classic on Blu-ray.
The film follows D’Artagnan (Gene Kelly) has dreams of being a swordsman. He arrives in Paris with hopes of joining the royal guard and falls in love with the beautiful Constance (June Allyson). After clashing with three of the king’s musketeers, Athos (Van Heflin), Porthos (Gig Young) and Aramis (Robert Coote), he joins them in their fight against the forces of the corrupt Richelieu (Vincent Price).
What can one say about this adventure, except that it is fun, exciting and dramatic little adventure. No wonder for MGM the film was such a success. It was such a success that the film ended up being the second highest grossing film of the 1940s for MGM.
Warner Archive has transferred this swashbuckling classic in 1080p in it's original full frame 1.37 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This new restoration truly looks amazing. The colors are vibrant in a array of rainbow goodness. The picture is crisp and clean that audio is clear with no hiss or pops. I must say this is the way you want to see 1948's The Three Musketeers.
