Ghostriders (1987) {Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Verdugo Entertainment shocked me with the stunning release of Roy Roger's First and Last films on Blu-ray. You can read the review of that release here.

In the 80s low budget horror films was big business. In 1987 an idea one such film came about, thus Ghostriders was born. Now Verdugo Entertainment and MVD Visual have joined forces to bring us this special deluxe edition Blu-ray.

In the town of Santa Rio, Texas, 1886. Reverend Thadeous Sutton leads a lynch mob. They drag the outlaw Frank Clements out of the jail cell where he is waiting for his trail and they hang him. But before he takes his last breath Frank swears to have his revenge on Sutton.

Fast forward to Santa Rio 100 years later in 1986. Frank and his gang has returned from the afterlife and kidnapped Jim Sutton,
the Reverend’s descendent. When Hampton, Jim's son, and his friend arrive at his father’s ranch. Setting up a showdown between the living and the dead.

Ghostriders is part western, part action and part horror. The acting is okay for the most part, but there is some times emotions seemed a bit forced and you can tell it. The costumes and the special effects for a low budget horror film is very good.

As for the direction Alan Stewart did a very good job in the director's chair. Sadly he only directed one other film 1989's Ghetto Blaster. It is a shame as it would have been interesting to see how he progressed as a director.

Many 80s cinephiles will no doubt remember renting this film on VHS. But this new Blu-ray release is far from VHS quality. Verdugo Entertainment have restored this film in HD. The film is presented in 1080p  in widescreen format with the original mono soundtrack. This new restored print looks amazing!

Now a new HD restoration of this film is not were this Blu-ray ends. This new deluxe Blu-ray is loaded with cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included in this set.
