When you hear the term 'singing cowboy' there are a few names that come to mind. Gene Autry, Tex Ritter and yes Roy Rogers.
Roy Rogers was known as the "King of the Cowboys" he appeared in over 100 films and numerous radio and TV shows. His final film is considered by many as one of his greatest, yet has been unavailable on home video until now.
Verdugo Entertainment and MVD Visual have joined forces to bring us Roy Rogers first and last starring films on Blu-ray both from new 4K scans. Let's take a look at these films.
Classic Cinema Plus Rating System
**** = Don't Miss It!
*** = Worth A Look.
** = An Okay Way to spend an evening.
* = You haven't missed anything.
Under Western Stars (1938) After being elected to congress, Roy rogers attempts to show the terrible conditions of his town to the government. ***
MacKintosh and T.J. (1975) MacKintosh is an aging cowboy and a drifter. He meets a 14 year old boy named T.J and takes him under his wing. ****
Under Western Stars is your typical 30s western complete with all the action and drama. But the stand out release here is MacKintosh and T.J. I think Roy Rogers saved his best for last. The story is a heart warming drama that will have you shedding a tear and cheering for the great Roy Rogers.
Both of these films have been transferred to Blu-ray from 4K scans. From what I have heard MacKintosh and T.J. has been seen on TV broadcast in less than stellar quality. Well, there is no fears of that with this release. The 4 K restoration is from original 35mm camera negative and it looks spectacular. The colors are vibrant, the pictures is crisp with just the right film grain.
Both films are presented in 1080p
with Under Western Stars in 1.33:1 aspect ratio and MacKintosh and T.J.
in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. Both films have a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. I
could not be more impressed with these transfers.
Now these two
films in absolutely impeccable quality would be enough to call this a
must own from this reviewer. But Verdugo Entertainment was not happy
with just that. So they added some very cool special features to this 2
Disc Blu-ray set. Take a look at what is included.
* Audio Commentary with Clay O'Brien, Andrew Robinson and moderator C. Courtney Joyner
* Lone Pine Cast Reunion with Clay O'Brien, Andrew Robinson and Larry Mahan
* Interview with Billy Green Bush
* Original On-Set Footage
* Theatrical Trailer

The main feature on this Blu-ray release is definitely MacKintosh and T.J. This film is more a western, it is a drama about how precious life is and a young boy growing into a man. I can not recommend this films enough. All movie fans should see this film and this Blu0ray is the prefect way to experience.
