Dead & Buried (1981) {Blue Underground Blu-ray Review}

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Blue Underground is known for releasing cult films that fans desire so much. At the end of May 2021 Blue Underground released a sci-fi adventure drama entitled The Final Countdown on 4K UltraHD. You can read our full written review of that release here.

Now it is time for another film to shine on 4K UltraHD thanks to Blue Underground. This time for the 40th anniversary of it's release is the 1981 horror / mystery film Dead and Buried. This new release is a 3 Disc UltraHD Blu-ray set. Let's take a look at this set.

The coastal town of Potters Bluff have seen a bunch of grisly murders. So the sheriff (James Farentino) investigates these murders and soon comes to realize the town coroner (Jack Albertson) has been creating an army of rural zombies.

Dead and Buried is great mix of horror and mystery. Most films 40 years later show their age or loose the impact. But I think the film's impact still holds up 40 years later. The make-up effects of Stan Winston really stand out! As I watch this 40 years later if it is even possible, it may have even gotten better, or maybe that is nostalgia talking.

When you hear the title 'Dead & Buried' you know you are in for a violent and frightening tale. And while it is the typical offensive material is found in most 80s horror films is a bit light in this one. The violence is still heavy, the profanity is not as bad as some other film of this era and the nudity is there but it is light in comparison to other films.

Blue Underground has transferred this film from the new 4K Restoration from the 35mm IP approved by Director of Photography Steven Poster, ASC. It is presented in
Ultra HD Blu-ray (2160p) and HD Blu-ray (1080p) the film is in it's original widescreen format in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The Audio is in English: Dolby Atmos; English: 5.1 DTS-HD; English: 1.0 DTS-HD; French: 1.0 DTS-HD. There is also English French and Spanish subtitles.

I must say this film has never looked better. This new 4K scan is a marvelous thing of beauty! It has the perfect amount of film grain. The picture quality vibrant and as crisp as a potato chip, which no doubt you'll go through many watching this film. And the audio is as clear as a bell.

Now as with Blue Underground's release of The Final Countdown. The gave loaded this set up with not only an UltraHD disc but a Blu-ray disc as well and an amazing Soundtrack CD, which is available for the first time ever. But that's not all! Check out these amazing on Disc bonus features.
