Green Dolphin Street (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

The now controversial film Gone with the Wind is considered a classic for it's tell of love and loss. In 1947 Elizabeth Goudge's novel Green Dolphin Street featuring love and loss was adapted and brought to the big screen.

Warner Archive Collection have been giving many of these classic films from yesteryear a chance to shine of Blu-ray. Now it's time for 1947's Green Dolphin Street to shine in glorious black and white in HD.

The film takes place in the year is 1840. When William Ozone is loved by two sisters Marianne
(Lana Turner) and Marguerite Patourel (Donna Reed). He becomes a naval officer on a ship called 'Green Dolphin'. When he arrives in New Zealand he writes a letter proposing marriage to the wrong sister. This causes the other sister life path to alter seriously.

The special effects in this film are epic to say the least. The earthquake scene and it's aftermath is so well done. I would put it up against anything CGI in this generation. It is that good. The story is a gripping roller coaster ride masterfully directed by Victor Saville. The love triangle between Lana Turner, Donna Reed and Richard Hart is perfectly portrayed. Here Richard Hart makes his film debut and it is sad to say, but he made only three additional films before he tragically died of a coronary occlusion in January of 1951.

Green Dolphin Street
is making its Blu-Ray debut thanks to Warner Archive and what a debut it is! This brand new 4K scan. It is transferred in 1080p in the original aspect ratio 1.37:1. The black and white photography shines on Blu-ray. I am very proud to report there is no damage to this print whatsoever.

Now for the audio it is a DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio. But the track so crystal clear, it is almost hard to believe. There is no hiss or pops. It is a perfect sounding audio track.

Bluray, Warner Archive Collection, Warner Brothers, Review,

Now I have to admit that this print is so perfect I would give it my highest recommendation on that alone. But Warner Archive Collection put some really nice special features on this release. Thus making a great Blu-ray even better.

Special Features

  • Lux Radio Theater Broadcast: The hour-long radio broadcast from September 19, 1949 sees the original stars Lana Turner and Van Heflin reprising their roles. But the cool part here is the addition of Peter Lawford to the cast. While this radio drama is extremely condensed, it is a very cool addition to this Blu-ray and I consider it a must hear experience.
  • Theatrical Trailer: An epic three-and-a-half-minute trailer. This is when trailers were something special.

From the epic story, the great special effects and the stellar cast Green Dolphin Street was a great film in 1947. And I am glad to say it still is in 2021. Good films transcend time and Green Dolphin Street is just such a film!

So if you love classic melodrama. If you are a fan of Lana Turner or Donna Reed. Or if you want to have a piece of history by owning one of Richard Hart's films. I can not recommend this Blu-ray enough! The picture quality and the bonus feature make this a no brainer for classic movie fans. Head over to Amazon.com and order your copy today.
