The films of Shohei Imamura are Japanese exploitation films, no doubt about it. This release is going to be for a very niche audience. There is a lot of sexual content, nudity and violence throughout the these three. So these are not for everybody. And to be honest they are not for this reviewer here. But they will find their audience and that audience will love this set.

It is a shame that these are exploitation, because I think the films could have been really good films with a wider audience.

So if you are a fan of Japanese cinema or exploitation films, you will want to add the Survivor Ballads Blu-ray to your collection. Head over to Amazon.com and get your copy!

  1. "The films of Shohei Imamura are Japanese exploitation films, no doubt about it."

Shohei Imamura made compassionate, literate and artful films and documentaries about people (especially women) surviving on the fringes of Japanese society. One of the films in this set, The Ballad of Narayama, won the Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. These are in no way exploitation films.
