Beach Red (Blu-ray Review)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

It take a very special kind of human to be a soldier. We all probably know someone in our family that is a war veteran. Many didn't return home, but the ones who did were not the same. That is why the brave veterans deserve our respect and admiration!

Many amazing films have been made about these soldier's sacrifice. One such film was 1967's Beach Red. Now Kino Lorber Studio Classics have given this 60s war classic a Blu-ray release it deserves.

Beach Red follows a group of young marines on a WWII tour of duty. After a battle to take the beach on a Japanese-held island in the Pacific, Captain MacDonald (Cornel Wilde) asks Sergeant Honeywell (Rip Torn) to lead a squad on a perilous journey deep into the jungle to find the enemy’s stronghold.

Cornel Wilde stars and directs this down and dirty, gritty tale. It really takes you right on the front line and the trenches to see the horrors of war. We see how these men are effected by the thoughts that they may never return home to their loved ones. We have heard the term war is hell and we really see how scary it can be in this film. It's very interesting that we see the terrors of war from both sides.

As for the film Blu-ray transfer. Beach red looks extraordinary in High Definition. It is presented in widescreen format (1.85:1) in 1920x1080p and in DTS-HD Master Audio. As for the picture, the blues of the sky above and the greens at the grass and shrubs are vibrant. The flesh tones are warm. I was really impressed by the picture transfer. The audio is the original 2.0 audio and it is pretty good. It gets the job done.

As for bonus feature on this release, it is a tad light! There is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and there is a bunch of trailers including the over 3 minute trailer for the film Beach Red. I would like to have had an audio commentary as a special bonus, but that is a minor complaint!

It is good to note that this is a very real and unflinching look at war. The violence is not gory but intense. There is also some sexual content, brief nudity and some mild profanity. So parental discretion is advised.

As always Kino Lorber Blu-rays make a beautiful addition to someone's Blu-ray collection and Beach Red is one such Blu-ray! Anyone looking to add a stellar looking copy of this Cornel Wilde film to their war movie collection needs this one. It looks that good!
