Review: Bird of Paradise

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Kino Lorber is know for restoring the classic films and giving them the release these films truly deserve. Well, the
Joel McCrea romantic movie Bird of Paradise set in Polynesia, has been seen in the public domain in copies that are less than stellar. Well, not anymore.

The film follows
Johnny (Joel McCrea) is an intrepid young sailor traveling the South Seas who falls in love with Luana (Dolores del Rio), the beautiful daughter of an island chief. But Luana is betrothed to a neighboring native prince, and is soon to be married. With little thought to the future, Johnny and Luana elope together, searching for paradise in each other’s arms.

Now this film won't be for everyone. But for fans of romantic dramas, this is a good one. Don't let the age of this film or the fact that it is in the public domain fool you. It is a very well produced film.

It is interesting to note that Bird of Paradise created a scandal all because of
a scene featuring Dolores del Río swimming naked. The film would go on to loose an estimated $250,000 at the box office. The film was just way before it's time. Joel and Dolores are amazing together.

Now for the Kino Lorber release. First off the
film is presented in the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio and the English mono 2.0 audio track. When you look at the difference between public domain versions and this one.... There is just no comparison. Kino Lorber is by far the better quality version.

In this day an age of streaming content, it is great to see Kino Lorber bringing their brand of amazing restored classic films to the masses. Kino Now streaming service is available on computers, Android and Apple devices, Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV.

So if you want to see the best quality version of this film that I have seen so far. I highly suggest heading over to KinoNow.com and rent or own this film. If you are a fan of physical media you can get this restored classic on Blu-ray from Amazon.com.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) Kino Now's Streaming release of Bird of Paradise receives....
