Blu-ray Review: Dream Demon

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

Arrow Video has been giving us 80's cinema fans a whole collection of collectable releases. We recently reviewed the beautifully restored James Earl Jones 1982 release of Blood Tide. You can read that review here. But now it's time for another 80's film to get some Arrow Video love. This time for 1988's Dream Demon.

The film follows Diana's life as she prepares for her marriage to decorated war hero Oliver. She moves into her sprawling new London home where she starts to experience strange and terrifying nightmares. But are these blood-curdling night terrors merely the symptom of an unsettled mind, or the sign of something far sinister at work? Hounded by a pair of sleazy journalists, Diana soon crosses paths with American tourist Jenny, who appears to have a strange connection to the foreboding house and its sinister past.

Most of the times these 80's horror films are not spectacular films. The stories are thin and the acting is only fair. But I have to say that Dream Demon surprised me. By no means is the film a classic, but it is a fairly enjoyable piece of cinema. It could be considered a British version of Nightmare on Elm Street. But this film is good on it's own, without having to be linked with that cult classic.

The film has been basically non existent on home video since the original VHS release. The good folks at Arrow Video have rescued this video from being forever forgotten. The film has been transferred in a brand new 2K restoration from the original camera negative, supervised and approved by director Harley Cokeliss. It is presented in High Definition (1080p) with the original uncompressed stereo audio and an option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

As for this restoration the film looks and sounds absolutely stunning. There is no real sign of damage to the print. It is hard for me to believe that no one thought to give this movie a DVD or Blu-ray release before this. Especially with all the horror hounds out there. This release is a huge deal for 80's horror fans, and we have Arrow Video to thank for it.
