Blu-ray Review: Blood Tide (1982)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In the 1980's there was a lot of low budget horror films that have become cult classic as the years have passed by. The fine folks at Arrow Video have been giving many of these film a ultra cool Blu-ray release that that so richly deserve. The next one of the list is Blood Tide.

When a treasure hunter named Frye played by James Earl Jones accidentally awakens an ancient sea monster that has been lying dormant on a Greek island, the inhabitants are forced to resume the practice of sacrificing virgins in order to placate the demonic creature. Meanwhile a couple, Neil and Sherry, arrive on the island in search of Neil's missing sister, Madeline.

Instead of going for gory violence Blood Tide goes for eerie atmosphere, building the tension to a fever pitch. For his first film Richard Jefferies does a remarkable job of bringing a nightmare to the screen. And what can be said about James Earl Jones but just amazing!

We probably all have seen the public domain versions of this film. But this version from Arrow Video is so superior. There is absolutely no comparison. The bright blues of the water make you feel like diving in there as well. Than the dark scenes are moody and the darkness is penetrating. The 4K restoration from the original camera negative. c'est magnifique.

But we all know that Arrow Video is never satisfied with giving there releases a bare bones restoration release. No Way! So that have loaded this disc with great bonus material. Let's take a look at what is included.

* High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) presentation
* Original uncompressed mono audio
* Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
* Brand new audio commentary with director/co-writer Richard Jefferies
* Newly-filmed interview with producer/co-writer Nico Mastorakis
* Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys
* FIRST PRESSING ONLY: Collector’s booklet featuring new writing on the film by Mike Gingold

So I say when it come to this public domain film Blood Tide. Don't pervert you eyes with those grainy and ugly prints found all over the internet. Instead treat yourself to a true remarkable restoration with Arrow Video's Blu-ray release. I think you will be as impressed as I am.
