Henry Winkler to most people will always be the hip leather jacket-wearing finger-snapping Fonz. And before Sally Field became a movie star she grew up on our TV screens as Gidget and Sister Bertrille in The Flying Nun. Than there was Harrison Ford an American Movie Icon! What else can you say?!
Well, in 1977 long before they would become entertainment legends these three joined forces to bring audiences a dramatic and romantic tale about the cost of war entitled Heroes.
For years this film was only available on DVD. But now thanks to the great folks at Mill Creek Entertainment Heroes makes it's debut on Blu-ray. But is the film worth the upgrade? We are going to give you our take on this release.
The film follows a troubled Vietnam veteran named Jack (Winkler) who is suffering from PTSD. He escapes a mental ward in New York City intent on starting a business as a worm farmer in Eureka, California. In a chance meeting at a bus station, Jack and Carol (Field) find a friendship the starts to grow more serious. Their adventures together soon would involve Ken Boyd (Ford) a former soldier in Jack's unit, who just happens to be a dysfunctional stock car driver. Can Carol help Jack come to grips with his past and his future? You'll have to watch the film to find out.
While it seems a bit strange to see The Fonz in such a struggle, I have to say Henry Winkler does a tremendous job bringing the character of Jack to life. No wonder Henry Winkler received a Golden Globe® nomination for this film. It is a very well deserved nomination.
While this film is rated PG this was in 1977. So if we are to be realistic about this. The film should be rated probably PG-13 for mature thematic material, violence, some disturbing images, and brief language.
Now for the Blu-ray transfer. The film is presented in 1080p High Definition Widescreen format and in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The transfer show a little bit of dirt in the picture throughout the film, but the colors are bright and the audio seems very clear. I am very impressed with the transfer of this film. I think Mill Creek Entertainment has done a great job with this release.
While there are no bonus features on this release we should make something perfectly clear here. The movie was released on VHS/DVD, the ending song, "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas was replaced by an instrumental song, as the rights to the song had not been obtained. Well, I am very excited to announce that on this Blu-ray release Kansas' classic tune is intact. Making this an even more amazing reason to pick up this release.
If you are a fan of Henry Winkler, Sally Fields or Harrison Ford this one film you are definitely going to want to check out. Head over to Amazon.com and get your copy today. You won't regret it!
