Magnum P.I. The Complete Series (Mill Creek Entertainment Blu-ray Review)

During the decade of the 1980s there were many great adventure TV shows. Some of them were The A-Team, Knight Rider, The Fall Guy, MacGyver, Miami Vice, Hunter and more. But one that seems to be on everyone's list s on of the best of the 80s was Tom Selleck in Magnum P.I.

Magnum P.I. ran for an amazing action-packed 8 seasons. Now the great folks at Mill Creek Entertainment have released an absolutely  stunning looking box set of this complete series on Blu-ray.

The series follows Vietnam veteran Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) who leaves the Navy and ends up a taking up position as a private eye and security advisor to famous author Robin Masters in Oahu, Hawaii. Magnum lives on Master's beachfront mansion and has full rights to drive Master's Ferrari. Now while Thomas never has to deal with Robin Masters he must deal with the stuffy British butler Higgins (John Hillerman) and the two Dobermans Apollo and Zeus. But with the help of his buddies from his days in the military T.C. (Roger E. Mosley) and Rick (Larry Manetti) he solves case after case.

Magnum P.I. was such an entertaining show. It had the perfect mix of drama and action with a little bit of comedy to keep it from feeling to heavy with all the serious storylines. Writers Donald P. Bellisario, Glen A. Larson and Reuben Leder did a tremendous job at balancing everything perfectly. Tom Selleck was perfect as Magnum and the rest of the cast is just as perfect. Everyone gelled making an amazing show.

Now the show's regulars were great, but there were also many great guest stars that rolled into this show as well. These are just some of the names you will see in this show, Lew Ayres (All Quiet on the western front), Ernest Borgnine (Marty), Carol Burnett (the Carol Burnett Show), Dick Butkus (Chicago Bears), Scatman Crothers (Stanley Kubrick's The Shining), Ted Danson (Cheers), Norman Fell (Three's Company), Erin Gray (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century), Alan Hale Jr. (Gilligan's Island), June Lockhart (Land of the Lost), Vera Miles (Psycho), Pat Mortia (The Karate Kid), Frank Sinatra (From Here to Eternity), Dennis Weaver (Gunsmoke) and so many more.

All 162 episodes of this series are spread across 30 Blu-ray discs. The episode of this show are presented in 1080p in the original full screen format the soundtrack is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. These episodes look sharp and the colors are vibrant with very clear audio. With episodes running 5 to 6 a Blu-ray disc that is plenty of room for that amount of episodes to breathe with no compression of these episode, and they do look tremendous.

Now all of the amazing Magnum P.I. episodes in one Blu-ray collection would be enough to call this a must own, but that is not all that is included in this set. Mill Creek Entertainment went above and beyond and added some very cool bonus feature to this massive set. Take a look.

* Legend of the Lost Art (Season 8, Episode 10) with Writer Jay Huguely

All these one disc bonus features are amazing. The only bad part I see is the two crossover episodes with The A-Team and Murder She Wrote are not included. That is a bummer. But
Mill Creek Entertainment added a very cool little feature on these Blu-ray cases. When you line-up the case on the front and back there are murals. Take a look!

This new Blu-ray set is amazing! It is a perfect collector's edition Blu-ray. It will give the viewer months of entertainment. Even with the missing A-Team episode and Murder She Wrote episode, I still consider it a must own.
