Scared Stiff (1987)

Reviewed By Jason Lockard

In the 80s there was a huge demand for low budget horror films. People would go to the video store and rent them on the weekends and enjoy the off the wall horror goodies. Well, we haven't changed a lot in all these years. Film fans still love a good horror movie, it's just there's not video stores anymore.

Arrow Video has been taking care of that by releasing many forgotten titles and giving them a release they truly deserve. The latest offering for the fans from Arrow Video 1987's Scared Stiff.

The film follows a couple who move into a house which was once where an evil Plantation owner lived. The slaves revolted against the evil master and summoned a demon which possessed the Plantation owner causing him to lock his wife and child in a casket in the attic.

Now in the present day, David Young (Andrew Stevens), a psychiatric doctor, and his girlfriend Kate (Mary Page Keller), a pop singer, move into the house with her son Jason (Joshua Segal). They are going to be one big happy family.... right? Well, let's not cue the happy soundtrack just yet. Cause the ghosts and evil spirits are not quite ready for company.

The film is a typical 80s horror film. You know what your in for here! No doubt about it. The screenplay was written by
Mark Frost, slightly before his Twin Peaks and is a pretty well crafted story. As for the acting it's not bad for a B horror movie.

The film has been restored in 2K from the original film print. It is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio and the original uncompressed Stereo audio and I have to say it looks stunning! But as with all Arrow Video releases they don't stop with a stunning copy of the film. They go above and beyond and load the blu-ray releases with bonus features. Let's take a look at what is included.

  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Brand new audio commentary with director Richard Friedman, producer Dan Bacaner and film historian Robert Ehlinger
