His Motorbike, Her Island (1986) Cult Epics Blu-ray Review

Here recently Cult Epics have been releasing some amazing Blu-rays. We have seen Wan Pipel, The Last Island, and AmnesiA. One thing is for sure Cult Epics do not skimp on their Blu-rays. They add great bonuses to make their releases "Epic"!

Now the latest film to receive the Blu-ray treatment is Nobuhiko Obayashi's 1986 award winning romantic film His Motorbike, Her Island.

Synopsis: Following a painful breakup, macho biker Koh (Riki Takeuchi) skips town and hits the road on his beloved Kawasaki W3 650. On his countryside excursion, he encounters the free-spirited Miyo (Kiwako Harada, older sister of Obayashi favorite Tomoyo Harada) who quickly takes interest in both the leather-clad Koh and his motorbike. Koh and Miyo fall in love even as Miyo's prodigious biking talent and thrill-seeking tendencies heighten Koh's fear that she may push it all too far. A nostalgia-filled reminiscence, Obayashi's monochromatic dream playfully worships the biker culture of yesteryear, delivering a sentimental and liberating take on young love.

The film was based on a 1977 novel by Yoshio Kataoka and stars Kiwako Harada (Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah), Riki Takeuchi (Yakuza Wives), Noriko Watanabe (Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.) and Tomokazu Miura (Beyond Outrage).
Obayash brought his eye for cinema to this film. What results is a romantic film, it has all the earmarks of drama and action. The story is okay. Nothing to write home about, as they used to say.

Cult Epics have transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and it is presented in 1.66;1 aspect ratio. There are two Japanese Language audio tracks. A LPCM 2.0 and a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles.

Cult Epics did a wonderful job restoring this 80s Japanese film to Blu-ray. The film looks crisp and clean. The picture is sharp and the audio is clear. Cult Epics never ceases to amaze and the quality of the products they produce. In addition they added some nice bonus features as well! Take a look at what has been included.

Samm Deighan does a remarkable job giving the listener tons of information about this film. The Visual Essays are wonderful introductions to the film. And lets talk about the artwork. With the slipcover and the Blu-ray insert there are three separate kinds of artwork. I love that! The booklet is a Japanese language booklet. I like the fact that it is original, but if you don't read Japanese, it doesn't do you that good.

All in All Cult Epics Blu-ray of His Motorbike, Her Island is a nice release for Japanese film fans. It's not a film for everyone, but romantic films fans will love it.
