Queen of Broadway (1942) {DVD Review}

Reviewed By: Jason Lockard

As a classic film fanatic it is hard to come across a film that I have never seen or at least heard of! Well, Alpha Video has done it, with Queen of Broadway! This little gem of a film was thought to be lost, but has been rescued and is now on DVD for the first time!

The film follows Sherry Baker (Rochelle Hudson), owner of a "sports service". She is very successful and is highly respected by gamblers in New York City. Ricky Sloan (Buster Crabbe), owner of the Panthers professional football team, and is in love with Sherry.

One day Jimmy Carson, a six-year-old boy, comes into Sherry's office to place a bet for his mother. Sadly though Jimmy's mother dies and Jimmy thinks she is asleep and can't wake her up! Not knowing how to break the news to the little boy, Sherry is roped into taking care of the kid for a little while while they figure what to do with him! Little did she know he would endear himself to her.

Now Sherry want to adopt the little tyke but there is a problem! The courts won't place a young boy with a single bookie female! What is Sherry to do? Will she loose Jimmy? Is Jimmy destined for the orphanage? You'll have to see the film to find out!

Probably most people are so used to seeing Buster Crabbe in the action genre, whether it's Tarzan, Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers. It was so nice to see him in something other than that. And believe me he does a great job in this film.

This film is an awesome mix of comedy, drama, a great story and perfect casting! I have nothing to say against this film! I was absolutely mesmerized! The film runs just over an hour long and the story moves along so well, It doesn't eve seem that long!

As far as the DVD goes the film looks stunning on this DVD the audio and video quality is great! I am so proud to have this forgotten gem as part of my collection!

So if you love real life human drama. Great characters, heart tugging dramas, Queen of Broadway is a must add to your collection! I can not recommend it enough! Head over to Oldies.com and get your copy today!
