Hyperspace (1984) KL Studio Classics Blu-ray Review

One of the best and most successful sci-fi franchises in history is George Lucas' Star Wars. His original trilogy spawned a prequel trilogy and a new trilogy, standalone movies and even series. Even though these new stories are no longer George Lucas' babies.

Now, anytime you're successful, there are going to be people who will try to ride the coattails of that success. Star Wars has seen many spoofs over the years. The best would have to be Mel Brooks' Space Balls. But in 1984, there was a low-budget film spoofing Star Wars. That film was Hyperspace. Now Kino Lorber has released this film on Blu-ray!

Synopsis: In his first starring role, Chris Elliott (Groundhog Day) plays Dr. William Hopper, a cocky UFO scientist on the trail of an evil Intergalactic Space Lord, who has unknowingly landed on the wrong planet, namely Earth in the rural South, where he bewilders the locals in his frustrated, hell-bent search for stolen radio transmissions and a space princess he had been pursuing. Will he and his alien minions meet their match when confronted by Hopper, some wily country folks, and the trigger-happy U.S. National Guard?

Okay, Hyperspace is not on the level of Spaceballs. Not by a long shot. But the pure unmitigated absurdity of this film makes it extremely entertaining. Chris Elliot is hilariously goofy and it is so cool to see stand-up comedic legend Paula Poundstone.

Kino Lorber has transferred Hyperspace to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English Dolby Digital 2.0 track. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Now both the director's cut and the Theatrical Cut of this film have been restored in 4K.

I never saw this film before on any media, so it is hard to compare this film to other releases. But what I have seen on this Blu-ray is a wonderful-looking picture quality. Sharp image with beautiful colors. And in addition to 2 discs with a regular version of the film and 2 3D versions of the film, there are some cool bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

Kino Lorber really went all in for this release, making it something extremely special. I love that you can watch this film in 2D or 3D. But the addition of the making-of featurette and the short film The Fright Before Christmas takes this release to a whole other level.
