Blu-ray Review: Deep Waters fails even with the help of Aaron Ackhart and Ben Kingsley

Disaster films were all the rage in the 1970s. Audiences rushed to the theaters to see the next horrific adventure. Films like “The Poseidon Adventure” and “The Towering Inferno” are among favorites. But in 2026 they are not as popular.

Renny Harlin the director known for such films as “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master,” “Die Hard 2,” “Cliffhanger,” “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” and “Deep Blue Sea.” directs a new film that would fit right in that genre with Deep Waters. Coming to Blu-ray!

Synopsis: A group of international passengers en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai are forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. Now they must work together in hopes to overcome the frenzy of sharks drawn to the wreckage.

Seeing the trailer, this film gave me high hopes for a fun adventure. The film stars Aaron Eckhart and the great Ben Kingsley. This gave me high hopes for this film. But without trying to spoil to much, Ben Kingsley would become a victim not even halfway through the film. This leaves Aaron Eckhart to carry this film alone. And while he is a good lead. There is only so much you can do with a super-predictable story.

The special effects are good and there are a few good jump scares. I think in the 1970s this film could have been right up there with the other disaster films. But in 2026 film fans like me have seen these stories over and over again. So, unfortunately, this becomes just another film.

Deep Waters has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The picture quality of this transfer is crisp and clean; there are no signs of damage to this print. The colors are gorgeous and the skin tones are correct. The water is so crisp you can almost feel the cold water. This is a tremendous-looking transfer.

Now, for me, always the best part of this kind of release is the bonus features. Well, I have to report there is zero bonus features. There is not even a flm trailer. Talk about disappointing. There should have been an audio commentary or a couple of interviews at least. But there is nothing.

If you are a huge disaster film aficionado, well, “Deep Water” may offer a good time for you. But for the casual film fan, maybe not so much. If you would like to add Deep Waters to your home video library, head over to Amazon and order your copy today.

Out of 4 film reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray or Deep Waters receives.....
