In the 1960s the drive-ins were filled with sci-fi and horror flicks that teenagers would attend in droves. No one is ever going to consider these films to be Oscar material. But no matter how campy they may seem and how cheesy they may be, no one can deny their entertainment value.
Kit Parker Films, VCI Entertainment and MVD Visual have joined forces to bring physical media fans a Blu-ray double feature of two 1960s campy creature flicks. This new Bu-ray is simply entitled The Creepy Creature Double Feature.
Movie Rating:
****=Don’t Miss it!
***=Worth a look.
**=An Ok way to spend some time.
*=You haven’t missed anything.
Slime People (1963) Prehistoric 'Slime People' emerge from the sewers of Los Angeles! The atom-age U.S. army is no match for this small band of spear-toting boogeymen and the city is evacuated. Left behind and forced to fight for survival are a TV sportscaster, a science professor, his two glamorpuss daughters, a bashful Marine and a nutty author in love with a sheep. **
The Crawling Hand (1963) A manned rocket returning from the Moon is invaded by an alien life force that possesses the astronaut, maintains control of his disembodied hand after a California beach crash-landing, and then imposes its will on a local medical student (Rod Lauren). Veteran players Kent Taylor, Richard Arlen, Alan Hale and Arline Judge struggle to retain their dignity in this five-fingered sci-fiasco! **
These two sci-fi cult classics have been transferred to Blu-ray on 1080p and are presented in widescreen format. The audio is an English PCM and there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
These two films have been restored in 4K. I have watched these two films before in less-than-stellar quality. But on this Blu-ray, these films are crisp and clean and look gorgeous in black and white, in addition to absolutely wonderful new 4k restorations of these films. This Blu-ray features nice little bonus features as well.
Bonus Materials
* The Slime People - Commentary track by Tom Weaver, OG Monster Kid!, film historian
* The Crawling Hand – Commentary by Rob Kelly, artist, reviewer, podcaster, and film buff extraordinaire!
* Video Featurette: Rubber Monsters, Real Fears: Mid-Century Sci-fi
* Unearthing The Slime People: Tom Weaver in Conversation with Susan Hart on the line
* Two-sided Sleeve with Original Cover Art by Robert Kelly and Retro Artwork on the flip-side
* Limited Edition Slip Case (available on the first 1,500 units Blu-ray only).

Okay, so these sci-fi/horror films are not Oscar-worthy, but they are extremely entertaining. And to see them newly restored in 4k and looking as amazing as they do. And the bonus features of audio commentaries, featurettes, interviews, and more. This really makes this release something very special.
