In the 1990s there were quite a few good movies based on comics. The standouts would have to be Dick Tracy (1990), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Batman Returns (1992), The Crow (1994) and Blade (1998). But there is another really fun comic strip film that is often forgot about. Of course I mean 1996's The Phantom.
The Phantom is approaching it's 30th anniversary. For this epic anniversary Kino Lorber's KL Studio Classics have decided to release this film on 4k and Blu-ray. Now superhero movie fans can add this highly underrated film on 4k or Blu-ray.
Synopsis: The story begins as an expedition lands on the island of Bengalla, seeking the legendary skulls of Touganda. Believed to harness an energy force of incalculable power, the skulls could spell disaster for mankind. And that’s exactly what ruthless tycoon Xander Drax has in mind…unless one man can save it.
The Phantom is such a horribly underrated superhero film it is almost criminal. Billy Zane (Titanic) is 'super' as The Phantom and the supporting cast is just as great, and includes Treat Williams (Deep Rising), Kristy Swanson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Catherine Zeta-Jones (The Mask of Zorro), James Remar (48 Hrs.), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat) and Patrick McGoohan (Escape from Alcatraz).
Simon Wincer (Lonesome Dove, Quigley Down Under) directed a thrilling, fast paced adventure film that still thrills 30 years after it's theatrical release. I am so glad that Kino Lorber has decided to release this film on 4k and Blu-ray.
Kino Lorber has transferred The Phantom to 4k and Blu-ray respectively and is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio track options an English 5.1 Surround and Lossless 2.0 Audio. There is also the option for English Subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Kino Lorber has taken this brand new HD master – from a 4K Scan of the 35mm Original Camera Negative. What results is a crisp and clean and simply spectacular looking picture. The audio is clean with no audio issues. But a gorgeous new 4k scan is not all this release has going for it. Take a look at the bonus features included on this disc.
Blu-ray Extras :
* NEW Audio Commentary by Director Simon Wincer, Moderated by Filmmaker Douglas Hosdale
* Kismet in the Jungle: NEW Interview with Star Billy Zane
* Slam Evil - Scoring The Phantom: NEW Interview with Composer David Newman
* Theatrical Trailer
As you can see all the bonus features listed are fresh. The audio commentary is a wonderful listen giving the listener a lot of information about the film. The interviews with Billy Zane and David Newman shows their love for this film.
While The Phantom is not the greatest superhero film ever produced, I enjoy it! Call it a guilty pleasure if you will. I am glad tyo have this new release in my home video library. If you love The Phantomas well, you can order a copy of this film on 4k/Blu-ray or the straight Blu-ray today.
