Film Noir was a style of Hollywood crime drama that featured mystery elements and was presented in a black-and-white visual style with roots in German expressionist cinematography. Many historians consider the first film noir to be the 1940s Stranger on the Third Floor.
Warner Archive Collection has been restoring quite a few film noirs over the last few years. Now they have restored Stranger on the Third Floor and released it on Blu-ray with some really impressive bonus features.
Synopsis: Peter Lorre plays the eerie title role in this gem about a reporter (John McGuire) whose testimony sentences a small-time loser (Elisha Cook, Jr.) to the electric chair for murder. When the reporter himself is fingered in a second murder, he realizes both crimes are the work of a furtive stranger -- but will anyone believe him?
Stranger on th Third Floor features a well written screenplay. The film moves along fast, running a short 64 minutes. Boris Ingster made his directorial debut with this film. And what a debut it is. He uses atmosphere as a character. The cast is good but of course the stand out is Pter Lorre. Peter Lorre has that unique look, and his unnerving performance here is unforgettable.
Stranger on the Third Floor is not the best film noir. Not by a long shot. But it is a very entertaining piece of cinema. There is really not much bad I can say about this film, except that the ending seemed a bit rushed. But all in all, this is a nice little film noir.
This groundbreaking film arrives on Blu-ray from the good folks at Warner Archive Collection and is presented in 10a 80p and in 1.37:1 aspect ratio with side mattes. The audio track is an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
This new transfer comes from a brand new 4k scan of the original nitrate camera negative. Thisheadingis hea90thn to its 90 birthday, and it looks crisp and clean. The black and white picture is perfect. The blacks are inky, and the whites are bridal gown bright with a wonderfully balanced gray scale. I am always amazed at how great a job Warner Archive does with restoring these films that are almost 100 years old.

Classic Cartoons
* Celling Hero
* Wacky Wildlife
The addition of these radio dramas is a huge plus for me. I have been listening to the old radio programs for most of my life. So anytime Warner Archive adds these to the Blu-ray releases, I am a happy camper. Then add two 1940 cartoons, and you have a great Blu-ray for your collection.
