Icefall (2025) Blu-ray Review – A Cold, Brutal Thriller Spectacle

When you think of survival films there are quite a few memorable ones in cinema history. There is The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Eight Below and who could forget Castaway. Juts trying to survive is one thing, but throw in the harsh elements of nature and you have a recipe for trouble.

In 2025 Writers Steve Isles and George Mahaffey and director Stefan Ruzowitzky brought to the screen a 'chilling' thriller of a survival picture entitled Icefall. Now physical media fans don't have to worry about trying to stream this release as it is now available on Blu-ray.

Synopsis: An Indigenous game warden arrests a poacher who knows where a crashed plane full of cash is hidden. Hunted by criminals and corrupt cops, the two must team up to escape across a thawing lake.

Icefall is a film with a good story to it and decent acting. But in all honesty the film fails because of the special effects. And there is the camera work. Certain shots in this film the camera is swaying for no apparent reasons. It should be a stationary shot and yet it looks like it is on a boat in a mild storm. A great cinematic idea falls apart because of how fake it looks. That is a shame because I was really looking forward to this film.

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 2.39:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English DTS-HS Master Audio. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The film was shot digitally so the picture is crisp and clean. The colors are bright and vibrant. There is no digital artifacts or audio anomalies on this disc. So, no worries about picture quality. But as for bonus features, this disc is void of any.

For me physical media is about picture quality and bonuses you can't find on a streaming service. There is no audio commentary, interviews, making of featurettes. There isn't even a trailer. That is sad.

I had high hopes for this release. Maybe a new classic like Fargo. Okay maybe that is pushing thinking this film would be even close to that film. But I was hopeful for an exciting thriller but came about feeling cold. And not because of the location.

If you can get past the bad special effects and the whole fakeness of the picture. You might enjoy Icefall. if you would like to add icefall on Blu-ray to your home video library head over to Amazon and order your copy today.

Out of film reels (4 being the best) the Blu-ray of Icefall receives......
