The James Dean Story (1957) Blu-ray Review – A Definitive Look at the Rebel Icon

No actor had such an impact in such a short time as that of James Dean. Dean burst on the scene with his Oscar nominated performance in his big screen debut East of Eden and then followed up with two more amazing performances in Rebel without a cause and Giant.

Dean was on the fast track to super stardom. He was easily going to be on the level of greats like Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart. But sadly, his career was cut way to short as he died in an auto accident on September 30th, 1955. He was only 24.

Two years after his death Warner Brothers released a documentary about his life, career and demise. The documentary was simply called "The James Dean Story". We are rapidly approaching the 70th anniversary of the death of James Dean so this documentary has now been released on Blu-ray via Shoreline Entertainment.

Synopsis: James Dean was a hero to many and a cultural icon of the mid-20th Century! The film was undertaken soon after James Dean's death and looks at Dean's life through the use of still photographs with narration, and interviews with many of the people involved in his short life.

Director's Robert Altman (M*A*S*H) and George W. George (My Dinner with Andre) brought this wonderful film to life. The James Dean Story tracks Dean's early life right up to his final appearance in a public service announcement for safe driving. Haunting but true!

Shoreline Entertainment have transferred this classic documentary to Blu-ray in 1080p and it is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is an English 2.0 stereo track. There is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

To be honest this film doesn't look like it has been restored. And there is no indication on the Blu-ray insert that is has been. But the film transfer doesn't look bad. There are no bonus features on this release. Dean was in a lot of TV before making the jump to film. Many of these performances are in the public domain. Adding some of them would have made this Blu-ray release so much better.

This is a wonderful in-depth tribute biography/documentary of the life and times of James Dean now on Blu-ray. It would have been nice to have some bonus features. And plus, this is a made-on-demand disc not a pressed disc. But still not a bad disc to have in your collection.

So, if you love classic Hollywood as much as I do. The James Dean Story needs to be in your collection. Head over to MovieZyng or Amazon and order your copy of The James Dean Story
