The Last Island (1990) Blu-ray Review

The Last Island Blu-ray cover
Marleen Gorris is a name forever linked in cinema history. She was the first woman to win the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar for her film Antonia’s Line in 1995. Cult Epics have been releasing film of Marleen Gorris on Blu-ray. We have seen deluxe releases of A Question of Silence & Broken Mirrors.

Now it is time for another Marleen Gorris film. This time a sci-fi drama from 1990 entitled The Last Island. This film features many familiar faces from films such as, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Willow.

Five men and two women, who survive an airplane crash, discover that they may be the only survivors of a world disaster. The question arises: whether the human race can survive or will man kind destroy itself.

The Last Island is a futuristic drama that Radio Times once called "An Adult version of Lord of the Flies." It is actually a really well acted, written and directed film. The cast includes such familiar faces as Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Shelagh McLeod, Kenneth Colley (The Empire Strikes Back) and British stalwart Patricia Hayes (Willow). This is without a doubt my favorite of the three films of Marleen Gorris that I have watched.

Cult Epics have transferred The Last Island to Blu-ray. It features a 2K restoration from the original 35mm print. The film is presented in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two English tracks to choose from the original LPCM 2.0 Stereo track and the new DTS-HD MA 2.0 Stereo track.

This new restoration looks and sounds amazing. There are no signs of damage that I could see to this print. The picture is crisp and clean, and the audio is clear. I am really glad to have seen this film for the first time in this new restoration.

But a stunning restoration is not all that this release has going for it. Not by a long shot. Cult Epics have added some really nice bonus features to this release. Take a look at what is included on this release.

* Audio Introduction by Dick Maas

* Audio Commentary by Film Scholar Peter Verstraten

* Behind-the-Scenes of The Last Island

* Interview with Politica Columnist Annemarie Grewel (Cinema 3, 1990)

* Original Theatrical Trailer and additional trailers

* Promotional Gallery

* Reversible artwork

With the inclusion of an insightful audio commentary, interview, introduction, featurette, trailers, gallery ad additional artwork. Cult Epics made this release really something special. I am glad to have this Blu-ray in my collection. I think you will too.
