The Stuff (1985) 4K Review – Ultra HD Restoration of Larry Cohen’s Bizarre Horror Gem

Larry Cohen is the imaginative director that brought the world such cult classics as Q: The Winged Serpent, the It’s Alive film series and God Told me to. On March 23, 2019, Cohen died from cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, California, at age 82. But he left behind some amazingly entertaining films.

Probably one of the most entertaining of his films arguably would be 1985's The Stuff. This satirical science fiction horror film written and directed by Larry Cohen and was the typical 80s sci-fi horror of the time. Campy, creepy and cool as could be. The Stuff is celebrating its 40th birthday this year, so Arrow Video has decided to celebrate with a new deluxe 4k UltraHD release.

Synopsis: The Stuff is the new dessert taking supermarket shelves by storm. It's delicious, low in calories and better still doesn't stain the family carpet... What's not to like? Well, for a start, it has a life of its own, and we're not talking friendly live bacteria... Young Jason seems to be the only one who doesn't love The Stuff - in fact, he won't go anywhere near it, after having seen the pudding crawling around the fridge one night. What's more, everyone who eats The Stuff has started acting really weird... Now, teaming up with wise-cracking industrial saboteur Mo, Jason must put a stop to The Stuff and the organization behind it or face a gooey, gloopy demise.

Larry Cohen brings his amazing eye for horror that we saw in such films as Maniac Cop, to The Stuff. The tag line of this film is perfect 80s goodness "Are you eating it... or is it eating you?" This B horror movie oozes onto the screen with 80s nostalgia that horror fans are just going to "eat up!"

Arrow Video have restored this film in 4K from the original camera negative for the 40th anniversary. The film is transferred in
4K and presented in 2160p UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible). The audio track is an Original lossless English 1.0 mono audio. There is also option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This new 4k restoration is really beautiful. This 40-year-old film really looks great in UltraHD. The picture is crisp and color are vibrant. The audio is clear. There are no signs of damage to this print and no digital artifacts or audio anomalies. I am extremely impressed with how great this fil looks in 4k! But as we all know by now Arrow Video adds more to their releases, so lets see what bonus features are included.
