Frankenhooker (4K UltraHD Review)

Horror Comedy is an extremely hard genre to pull off. Many try, and most fail, and some fail miserably. In 1990, Frank Henenlotter entered into the world of Frankenstein to do a horror comedy. Now the idea od spoof comedy of Frankenstein had already been done and done masterfully by Mel Brooks, but would Henenlotter's Frankenhooker be as good as that?

Frankenhooker is celebrating it's 36th anniversary. And what better way to celebrate than to restore and release this film in 4K! Well, that is exactly what Synapse Films has done with Frankenhooker.

Synopsis: When medical student Jeffrey Franken's fiancée Elizabeth is accidentally decapitated by a remote-controlled lawnmower, his grief drives him to attempt the impossible. Using questionable medical expertise and body parts harvested from Manhattan street prostitutes lured by his homemade explosive drug 'Super Crack,' Jeffrey reconstructs Elizabeth, only to discover that her resurrected mind has become dangerously unstable.

Now make no mistake about it. Frankenhooker is not a 'good film '; it's not supposed to be. It knows its absurdity, and it embraces it. This is an off-the-wall crazy exploitation film, with stellar make-up effects. Frank Henenlotter is known for his films Basket Case and Brain Damage. These films have become cult classics over the years. But so has Frankenhooker. 

Synapse Films has transferred the film to 4k disc in 2160p and is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. There are two English tracks to choose from the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 or 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Synapse Films has restored Frankenhooker in Dolby Vision from the archival uncut original 35mm vault materials. So what we get is the best-looking version of this film imaginable. But that is not all Synapse Films put on this 4K release. Look at the bonus features included.
