Many people feel that the film Steppenwolf was based on Hermann Hesse’s novel ‘Steppenwolf,’ first published in German in 1927. But that would be mistake to believe that. Because according to director Adilkhan Yerzhanov, the film is nothing like the novel, except that it examines the dichotomy between the spiritual and animalistic (nature's) in man.
Arrow Video have been distributing many of these foreign language films to English speaking audiences. This way we can experience the amazing filmmakers from around the world. Now Steppenwolf get's it's turn to shine on Blu-ray!
Synopsis: Tamara (Anna Starchenko), a young lady consumed by trauma, searches for her missing son, Timka, in a small town dominated by riots and violence. In a desperate attempt to get him back, she teams up with an amoral former police investigator (Berik Aitzhanov) whose methods prove to be frequently cruel and sadistic. Quietly determined, Tamara decides to complete the mission with the nihilistic detective, no matter the cost, as the pair embark on a bloody and bullet-riddled road trip in their combined search for salvation.
Steepnwolf is quite the cinematic ride. The pacing is slows and speeds up and slows again. Taking the viewer on a rollercoaster ride. I have to say director Adilkhan Yerzhanov has a tremendous eye for visual filmmaking. He bring the realism to his films. It's no wonder that Steppenwolf won the Golden Raven Grand Prix at the 2024 Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival and the Outstanding Performance Awards went to both Anna Starchenko and Berik Aitzhanov at the 2024 Fantasia Film Festival.
Arrow Video has transferred Steppenwolf to Blu-ray in 1080p and presented in widescreen format. The audio track is the original Kazakh lossless DTS HD-MA 5.1 surround audio. There are also English and Spanish subtitles for Steppenwolf.
The transfer is crisp and clean with no signs of digital artifacts. But a great transfer is not all that is included on this disc. Arrow Video added some terrific bonus features. Take a look at what is included.
* Full Length Feature Film 'Goliath'
* Brand new audio commentary on Steppenwolf with critic and pop culture historian David Flint, recorded exclusively for Arrow Video in 2025
* Reading Steppenwolf as a Transnational Post-Western, a brand new visual essay by author, film historian and academic Lee Broughton, exploring the use of American and Italian Western genre tropes in Steppenwolf and other films from around the world
*The Making of Steppenwolf, a 15-minute behind-the-scenes featurette featuring interviews with the cast and crew
* Illustrated collector’s booklet featuring new interviews with Steppenwolf cast and crew members including writer-director Adilkhan Yerzhanov, producer Aliya Mendygozhina, actors Berik Aitzhanov and Anna Starchenko, composer Galymzhan Moldanazar and cinema
* Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly-commissioned artwork by Time Tomorrow
All the bonus features found on this disc are wonderful, but the true standout for me is the full-length feature film Goliath in which, 'a small village is controlled by a criminal boss called Poshaev. He provides housing and jobs for the inhabitants but expects loyalty and anyone who oppose him will suffer the consequences.' When you get two films for the price of one that is always a win.
Steppenwolf is not a fun popcorn movie, but it is an engaging, utterly engrossing film that will have you wondering where it is taking you the whole time. And in this day and age that is a hard thing to come by. Just realize this film is not dubbed in English, so if you don't like reading subtitles you may not want to jump into this film. But if you love foreign cinema and a film that is completely outside the box, you may want to try Steppenwolf. Head over to MVD Shop or Amazon and order your copy today.
