Tribute to Hardcore Wrestling Legend Sabu

Terry Michael Brunk that name my not mean much to the average person. It may not even mean much to the average wrestling fan, but you no doubt know his in ring name, Sabu.

According to friend Rob Van Dam he was born December 12, 1963. Sabu and Van Dam were trained by Sabu's uncle Ed "The Sheik" Farhat, the legendary wrestler who was best known for throwing fireballs. Sabu began his wrestling career in his uncle's promotion "Big Time Wrestling" in Detroit, Michigan.

During his career Terry Brunk would go through many names including, Sabu of the Jungle, Sabu the Elephant Boy, Samu, Terry S.R. and Terry Snuka. Sabu found himself having runs in New Japan Pro Wrestling, USWA, he had dark matches in the World Wrestling Federation. But it wasn't till he found himself in ECW that he found his home.

Sabu relished the hardcore style, that is why even after ECW closed their doors, he would change his style and would compete in the rebooted ECW produced by WWE, TNA Wrestling and would thrill fans on the independent scene, Juggalo Championship Wrestling, and even appear in All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2023.

On April 18, 2025, Sabu wrestled his retirement match at Game Changer Wrestling's (GCW) facing off against Joey Janela. Sabu would defeat Joey Janela. Sadly, just three weeks later, May, 11, 2025 Sabu would pass away the cause is undisclosed. He was 61!

It is interesting that just a couple days after Sabu's passing the documentary series The Dark Side of the Ring aired the latest episode about The Shiek in which Sabu talked about his uncle. This was Sabu's last interview.

Sabu was best known for his hardcore style, but he was a world champion as well! He was a 2-time ECW World Champion and held the NWA World title once. So yeah, he was much more than a hardcore barbwire wrestler.

I will never forget seeing Sabu do the most insane dives into the fanatical Philly crowds. And his run in TNA Wrestling. He just like his uncle lived the gimmick. That is something that we don't see anymore.

Rest In Peace Terry "Sabu" Brunk. You will live forever in your amazing moments and matches!
