Dark Sanctuary: The Story of the Church (Blu-ray Review)

In my late teenage to young adult years I was living in a dark place in my mind and I was dressing goth and listening to punk music like Offspring. But I never fully embraced the goth lifestyle.

In Texas there was a goth night club called "The Church". It was home for many goth bands and was a go to place for the goth community. Now indie horror filmmaker Timothy Stevens made a documentary about The Church entitled Dark Sanctuary and is now released on Blu-ray from Cleopatra Entertainment.

Synopsis
: A feature-length documentary about the historic Dallas, TX Goth club - The Church, Dark Sanctuary exposes the incredible, shocking history of one of the longest running goth clubs in the U.S. as well as the world-renowned artists who performed there. Through interviews with world-famous music artists, local bands, and patrons, the film tells the story of the community that formed over nearly three decades of the legendary club's existence. The motto of The Church became Enter Without Prejudice meaning no matter who you are, how you look, how you dress, your sexuality, your gender identity, the color of your skin, your body type, all are welcome and embraced at The Church. Follow DJ in residence, Joe Virus, on his journey from aspiring musician to headlining the main stage for over 20 years and through the events of the global epidemic which lead to a neighborhood buyout from a multimillion-dollar real estate company, threatening to claim the beloved building at 2424 Swiss Avenue. Just what will happen when the deep south's premiere goth club of nearly thirty years stands on the brink of being lost forever?

This documentary is a well told one. For the most part the story of this long-gone club is told from that of Joe Virus and owner Don Nedler. But when watching the documentary, you realize this was more than just a club. This was a home away from home for so many people. It was a place without prejudice. The film runs under an hour and a half and is a fast-paced documentary and is over before you know it.

Dark Sanctuary has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is a Dolby Digital 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The video transfer is crisp and clean with no signs of digital artifacts. But in all honesty the video varies in quality because of the archival footage used.

Cleopatra Entertainment and MVD Visual have added some very cool bonus features to this Blu-ray release. Take a look at what is included on this Blu-ray.

* Uncut Celebrity Interviews with cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy, Paul Oakenfold and Aurelio Voltaire.

* Solemn Assembly music videos: “Oontz Oontz Oontz 4 Ur Boom Boom” and “You Belong To The Night”

* Trailer

I really like the addition of the Uncut interviews. Going deeper into the thoughts on The Church really takes the viewer closer to why this place was so special. The music videos are also a very nice bonus.

This is an insightful documentary, but this is for a very niche audience. If you're not into the goth movement, this is going to be completely uninteresting. It is just not going to appeal to everyone. But for those that love the goth lifestyle and goth music. This will really be an interesting watch.

So, if you love documentaries or goth music this new Blu-ray release from Cleopatra Entertainment and MVD Visual is a must see! Head over to MVD Shop or Amazon and order your copy today!
