My Girl (1991) 4k UltraHD Review

For a few years there was child actor for popular than that of Macaulay Culkin. For the holiday classic Home Alone to Uncle Buck to fun features like Richie Rich, The Pagemaster and Getting Even with Dad. But just one year after he took on Harry and Marv defending his house in Home Alone he joined to acting legends for the coming-of-age film My Girl.

My Girl has become a classic over the years. It is hard to believe that this film is coming upon its 34th anniversary.  Well Sony Home Entertainment has decided to give this classic a 4K UltraHD release. With this film in 4k and bonus features this is going to make a great addition to someone's library.

Synopsis: Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky), is a precocious 11-year-old tomboy obsessed with death. Harry Sultenfuss (Dan Aykroyd) is her widowed father, the town mortician, and Shelly DeVoto (Jamie Lee Curtis) is the sexy cosmetician he employs. Thomas J. (Macaulay Culkin), the boy next door who idolizes Vada. Their summer adventures from first kiss to last farewell introduce Vada to the world of adolescence. 

My Girl is a beautifully crafted story by Laurice Elehwany and expertly directed by Howard Zieff (Private Benjamin). The cast includes the great acting talents of Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween), Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters), Griffin Dunne (An American Werewolf in London). But there real stars of this coming of age film are Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone) and newcomer Anna Chlumsky. 

When watching My Girl you will thoroughly be entranced by the story and the acting. The chemistry between Culkin and Chlumsky is undeniable. Anna Chlumsky is incredible in her acting debut.

Sony has transferred My Girl to 4K in 2160p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. There are two audio options an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio and an English 2-Channel Surround Sound. In additions there is foreign language dubs of French in 2.0 Dolby Digital and Spanish Stereo. Finally, there is also subtitles in English, French and Spanish.

Now this transfer is not just any kind of transfer it is sourced from a 4k scan of the original camera negative approved by cinematographer Paul Elliott. I have watched My Girl a couple of times but seeing it now in 4K UltraHD is like watching a whole new movie. The picture is crisp and clean, and the colors are simply gorgeous. This is truly a wonderful 4K scan. But in addition to this beautiful 4k scan, Sony added some cool bonus features. take a look at what is included.

As much as the gorgeous 4k UltraHD scan of this film is the bonus features make this release that much better. The informative audio commentary is a must listen. And I love the featurettes, those are always a welcomed addition to any release.
