In 1957 to 1962 Robert Horton co-starred in the classic western Wagon Train. After his run on that program, he got the title role in the western The Man Called Shenandoah. Warner Archive Collection has released the tv series on Made-on-Demand DVD and through their streaming service Warner Archive Instant.
Now as this show is approaching its 60th anniversary Warner Archive collection have restored these episodes and released them on Blu-ray fir the first time ever. What a wonderful gift for the holidays!
Synopsis: A gunfighter (Robert Horton) who is suffering from amnesia in search of his identity across the wilds of the Old West in this seldom-seen sixties Western classic. A stranger is shot and left to die from exposure to the elements. Half dead, he is brought to a small town by a pair of cowboys who hope there may be a reward for his capture. A worldly woman, Kate (Beverly Garland), nurses the man back to health. When he recovers consciousness, the man has no idea who he is or where he came from. Newly christened Shenandoah by Kate, he is forced into a gunfight, killing the one man who might have told him who he is. Forced to bid goodbye to Kate, he sets out on the long, lonely trail to discover his own identity.
Robert Horton is prefect as the tough yet vulnerable Shenandoah. The stories are well crafted and the dialogue is amazingly written. While this is a TV series, it is shot in epic scale like a movie. It is a shame that this show only ran for 1 season and 34 episodes. It deserved much better than that short of a run.
During this series short 1 season run there were a lot of amazing guest stars that came through. We saw such notable stars as Claude Akins, Ed Asner, Elisha Cook Jr., Jeanne Cooper, John Dehner, Bruce Dern, Elinor Donahue, Leif Erickson, Beverly Garland, Sally Kellerman, DeForest Kelley, George Kennedy, Martin Landau, Cloris Leachman, John McIntire, Martin Milner, Leonard Nimoy, Jeanette Nolan, Warren Oates, Susan Oliver, Joyce Van Patten, James Doohan, and Michael Witney.
Warner Archive have remastered these episodes in 4K from the original camera negatives. These new scans have been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and are presented in their original 1.33:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Finally, there is English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
The 34 episodes are spread across 5 Blu-ray discs. These new 4K scan bring such clarity and wonderful crispness to these episodes. So sharp are these prints that they look as though they were shot yesterday in HD!

The man Called Shenandoah ran on Monday Nights at 9PM. This was a time when there was only three networks. For younger people they can't believe there was ever a time like that, but there was. And ABC ran The Man Called Shenandoah against one of the greatest sitcoms of all time The Andy Griffith Show. Very few shows could last against that juggernaut. That is why this show was cut short.
The Man Called Shenandoah is a wonderful western drama. It so good it deserves to be in the conversation with other great westerns like Gunsmoke, Have Gun, Will travel, Bonanza and others. Now you can watch these great episodes in gorgeous quality, thanks to Warner Archive's Blu-ray release.
