Elvira Mistress of the Dark (1988) Arrow Video 4K UltraHD Review

Cassandra Peterson is an 80s icon, but probably many know here more under her stage name Elvira. Elvira hosted a TV series feature many B movies of the sci-fi and horror genre. Her show was extremely popular. Well in 1988 New World Pictures saw money with her popularity and decided to give her a feature film.

Elvira Mistress of the Dark was release Septeember 30, 1988. It received mixed reviews at the time and was not a commercial success. But as the years have gone by it has gained cult classic status. Now Arrow Video has decided to give this cult film a 4K UltraHD release.

SynopsisHaving just quit her job as a Los Angeles TV horror hostess, Elvira receives the unexpected news that she's set to inherit part of her great aunt Morgana's estate. Arriving in the small town of Fallwell, Massachusetts to claim her inheritance, Elvira receives a less than enthusiastic reception from the conservative locals - amongst them, her sinister uncle Vincent, who, unbeknownst to Elvira, is in fact an evil warlock secretly scheming to steal the old family spellbook for his own nefarious ends.

Elvira Mistress of the Dark is extremely entertaining film. But the film
is from a different time. A time when the world hadn't been taken over by political correctness. There are some imageries that audiences in this generation may find offensive. But fans of 80s films are going to love this release.

Arrow Video has transferred Elvira Mistress of the Dark to 4K in 2160p Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible). The audio is the original uncompressed stereo 2.0 audio. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

But this isn't just any 4K transfer this transfer features a brand new 4K restoration by Arrow Films. I have seen this film before, but to see it now with this 4K restoration this film looks crisp and clean. There is no signs of digital artifacts or damage. And as for the audio is clean with no hiss or pops of audio anomalies. Arrow Video did a great job with this restoration. But that is not all that is included in this 4K release. Take a look at the bonus features included.

I love the inclusion of not 1, not 2, but 3 audio commentaries. The featurettes were really interesting especially the creation of the Pot Monster. That was really cool! I say it all the time, but Arrow Video never ceases to amaze with their releases. And this new 4K UltraHD of Elvira Mistress of the Dark is a true must own for 80s film fans.
