Genie (2023) Blu-ray Review

The holiday season is in full swing. It is time for holiday movies and TV shows. I always enjoy new Christmas movies to watch during the season. Peacock network produced an original movie last holiday season entitled Genie. This film is actually a remake of the 1991 British TV film entitled "Bernard and the Genie" that starred Allan Cumming and Rowan Atkinson.

Now Peacock's 2023 film is simply entitled "Genie" and stars Melissa McCarthy. Now for the 2024 holiday season Universal Home Entertainment are releasing this holiday film on Blu-ray and DVD. So, you can bring the holiday adventure home instead of streaming it!

SynopsisBernard (Paapa Essiedu) is a workaholic who has lost his wife and daughter because of his desire to get ahead above of his family. Well, he polished a bejeweled box out pops a genie named Flora (Melissa McCarthy) his desire is for her to help him win his family back before Christmas.

Genie really is a very good holiday film. Except for a couple mild words and phrases some parents may find offensive, it is a very good family film. But all in all, it is a funny, dramatic, heartfelt film that the whole family will love. And as much as I enjoyed the original film. I must say I think this remake is a bit better than the original.

I didn't hold a lot of hope when watching this film, but I am glad to announce I was completely wrong. Melissa McCarthy character is delightfully innocent. Flora the genie is experiencing the wonders of this new world with childlike glee. Including enjoying sanitizer, thinking it's a sweet Christmas treat.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has transferred Genie to Blu-ray in 1080p it is presented in widescreen format and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

I watched Genie last year on Peacock network during its premiere and seeing it not on Blu-ray I was truly impressed how crisp and clean this film looks. As good as streaming is, it can never take the place of a physical media release.

Now as for bonus features, there are none. I would have loved to see the inclusion of a making of Genie featurette, interviews, an audio commentary or even just a trailer. But sadly none of those are present.

If you are looking for a fun, entertaining, delightful holiday comedy film with a lot of heart. Give Genie a chance I think you will be surprised how entertaining it is. Genie is available on both Blu-ray and DVD. You can order your copy of this film at MovieZyng! Head over and pick up your choice either DVD or Blu-ray today!
