Deer Camp '86 (Blu-ray Review)

The slasher genre has been a popular one for decades. But the origins of this genre can be tracked back to films like Toby Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silent Night, Bloody Night and John Carpenter's Halloween just to name a few.

But where the slasher genre kicked it up was when we got the iconic characters of Jason in Friday the 13th film series and Freddie in the Nightmare on Elm Street film series.

These films have become more than just cult classics, they are classics. Filmmakers have been inspired by these films and have been making films of their own in this genre. One such film was Deer Camp '86. Now on Blu-ray thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment.

Synopsis
: In the fall of 1986, six knuckleheads from Detroit embark on a deer hunting trip. Things take a dark turn when something horrific is awakened: an ancient Native American spirit, seeking vengeance for the deaths of several indigenous girls. The hunters became the hunted, caught in a chilling supernatural struggle.

I don't know how many low budget slasher films I have had to suffer through while reviewing film over my years. More than I care to remember. But I must say Deer Camp '86 is a throwback to 80s slasher films. It is produced like it was made in the 80s and it comes off very well! The costumes, the automobiles, the lack of cellphones. When watching this film it is truly like you stepped back in time!

The storyline is very good one. The acting is not bad. The cool thing about this film is it is not a retread of other slasher films, while it still has the slasher premise that we all know and love. The production value of this film is very impressive. This film like all slasher films is filled with excessive profanity, violence, gore and sexual content. So viewer discretion is advised.

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard if hearing.

This film transfer to Blu-ray is stunning! The picture is crisp and clean there is no digital artifacts that I could see and the audio is clear as a bell. The one major downside for me on this release is the lack of bonus features. I am a huge physical media fan and onw thing |I love with my Blu-rays is bonus features. Well, this release is void of any! That is a shame!

If you love 80s slasher films I really think you will get a major kick out of Deer Camp '86. If you would like to add a copy of this film on Blu-ray to your slasher collection, head over to Deep Discount or Amazon and order your copy today!
