That Uncertain Feeling (1941) Blu-ray Review

When you think classic screwball comedies there are a few films that come to mind. Bringing up Baby starring Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, It Happened One Night starring Clark Gable, Jack Benny's To Be or Not To Be and my absolute favorite Arsenic and Old Lace starring Cary Grant.

In 1941 the great Ernst Lubitsch directed a screwball comedy entitled "That Uncertain Feeling". It is hard to believe that this film is over 80 years old. VCI Entertainment and MVD Visual have released this film on Blu-ray!

Jill and Larry Baker have been living in marital bliss for six years...that is, until Jill develops a nasty bout with the hiccups. Exhausting all remedies to no avail and believing her problem to be psychosomatic, Jill takes the advice of friends and seeks the help of a psychiatrist. This leads to disenchantment with her husband, Larry, causing marital mayhem, when she becomes romantically involved with an eccentric pianist named Alexander Sebastian, who favors himself 'the greatest pianist in the world', only, Sebastian, is terrified of performing in front of large audiences! Hilarity abounds in this robust comedy, as Larry strives to win back his estranged wife and in turn, Jill comes to the realization she still loves Larry.

The film was written by Walter Reisch and Donald Ogden Stewart and was based on the 1880 French play Divorçons by Victorien Sardou and Émile de Najac. The dialogue is snappy and the story moves along nicely.

Joining the stunning Merle Oberon in this comedy is great performers like Melvyn Douglas (The Vampire Bat), Burgess Meredith (Rocky), Eve Arden (Our Miss Brooks), Alan Mowbray (Night Life of the Gods), Olive Blakeney (The Strange Woman), Harry Davenport (Meet Me in St. Louis), Sid Ruman (Ninotchka) and Richard Carle (San Francisco).

During its original release it was not a box office success. And over the years it has been considered not the best of the screwball comedies. I think it gets a bit of a bad reputation. Granted it is not Arsenic and Old Lace or Bringing up Baby. But this film is a very entertaining little feature.

That Uncertain Feeling has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in the original full screen format in 1.37:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a Dolby Digital mono audio. And there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

This new Blu-ray transfer is pretty impressive. The black and white picture is crisp and clean, for the most part. The picture is sharp with just a couple of specks of minor dings to the picture. There are no digital artifacts. The audio is clear with no signs of hiss or pops. Just Amazing! But that is not all that is included on this Blu-ray!  take a look at the bonus features included on this disc.

* News Parade of 1941: A near 10 minute news reel that gives the viewer an update on the war effort!
* Classic Cartoon: Henpecked Duck (1941) Daffy's wife wants a divorce after he performed a disappearing magic trick with their egg Jr. and now can't get him back.

I love the fact that there was included a news reel and a cartoon. Back in the 40s at a trip to the theater you would get a newsreel and a cartoon before the main feature. This disc takes you back to a classic theater experience. And you really can't put a price on that!

So, if you love classic screwball comedies this new Blu-ray release of That Uncertain Feeling is one great release you will want in your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today!
