Alfred Hitchcock's directing career spanned six decades. He directed over 50 feature films. His style of direction has become something that inspiring filmmakers study.
It has been difficult to cut down to 7, but we are counting down our Top 7 favorite Hitchcock films!
7. The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) An American doctor (James Stewart) and his wife (Doris Day) and son are vacationing in Morocco. They witness a murder while on vacation and are drawn into a twisting plot of international intrigue when their young son is kidnapped.
6. Vertigo (1958) A former San Francisco police detective (James Stewart) juggles wrestling with his personal demons and becoming obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful woman (Kim Novak) he has been hired to trail, who may be deeply disturbed.
5. North by Northwest (1959) A New York City advertising executive (Cary Grant) goes on the run after being mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies, and falls for a woman (Eva Marie Saint) whose loyalties he begins to doubt.
4. The Birds (1963) A wealthy San Francisco socialite (Tippi Hedren) pursues a lawyer (Rod Taylor) to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.
3. Strangers on a Train (1951) A psychopath (Robert Walker) forces a tennis star (Farley Granger) to comply with his theory that two strangers can get away with murder.
2. Rear Window (1954) A photographer (James Stewart) is stuck in a wheelchair with a broken leg. He begins spying on his neighbors from his courtyard apartment window, and becomes convinced one of them has committed murder.
1. Psycho (1960) A Phoenix secretary (Janet Leigh) embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man (Anthony Perkins) under the domination of his mother.
In his later years Hitchcock health was declining which caused the output of films to not be as high in number as it had been. Alfred Hitchcock was working on a spy thriller entitled The Short Night. When on April 29th 1980 died of kidney failure.
Sadly we never got to see The Short Night, but Hitch left behind a huge catalogue of films that will be studied by film fans and aspiring film makers for generations to come.
