Du Barry Was a Lady (1943) Blu-ray Review

When you think of television comedy two names are iconic in history. They are Lucille Ball and Red Skelton. These made a career out of starring in TV shows. But before they became Queen and King of Television, they were movie stars. These two joined forces for a musical comedy in 1943.

MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) released Du Barry Was a Lady not only starring the comedy royalty, but a star-studded cast that featured, Gene Kelly, Virginia O'Brien, "Rags" Ragland, Zero Mostel and Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra.

Warner Archive Collection have been restoring MGM classics in 4K and releasing them on Blu-ray. Now this Ball/Sketon film is getting its chance to shine on Blu-ray.

A nightclub's coatroom attendant Louis Blore (Red Skelton) is in love with the club's singer May Daly (Lucille Ball). When Louis drinks a Mickey Finn (a doctored drink given to someone so as to make them drunk or insensible.) him dream he's French King Louis XV, courting the infamous Madame Du Barry.

I am a huge fan of Lucille Ball and Red Skelton. Now while admittedly this film is not either of these stars best film. It still brings a lot of fun to your TV screen. Along with the fun we get the amazing music of Cole Porter, "Do I Love You?", "Katie went to Haiti" and "Friendship."

The film has been transferred in 1080p in 1.37:1 aspect ratio the audio is a DTS-Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. This new restoration brings new vitality to this film. There is absolutely no signs of damage, dirt or debris in this print. It is stunning how good it looks.

In addition to an amazing looking restoration Warner Archive Collection added some cool bonus to this disc. Take a look at what is included.

* MGM Cartoon: Bah, Wilderness (1943) Barney the bear is on a camping trip, but instead of a relaxing time he must deal with the wildlife, less that cooperative air mattress, then a downpour of rain.

* Theatrical Trailer

I simply love when Warner Archive add the classic cartoons to their Blu-ray releases. It makes for such a great night of entertainment. Watching this new restoration of Du Barry was a Lady is like watching it for the first time. You will have a ball with Lucy and turn red laughing at the antics of Skelton.

So, if you are a fan of Lucille Ball and Red Skelton, why not get a film that puts these two together. Warner Archive's Blu-ray of Du Barry was a Lady is so gorgeous it needs to be in your collection head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today.
