Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 Ultimate Collection: DVD Review

After so much hype the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem movie is upon us. This is a great time to relive the original series and the rebooted series. As a small child I remember watching the Ninja Turtles cartoon. I even vividly remember going to Burger King and collected all 4 of the Ninja Turtles VHS tapes featuring episodes of the series. I wore those tapes out. It's hard to believe, but I still have those tapes to this day.

In 2003 there was a rebooted version of the classic cartoon. It ran for 7 seasons and a TV movie. Now where this series differed from the original cartoon is, the original series was kid friendly with very little violence. The 2003 version was more like the original comics that was made for adults, this series is tailored for teens and adults.

Series Synopsis: When four pet turtles were bathed in alien ooze, they began to mutate and became the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Raised in New York City sewers by their foster father and wise sensei, Master Splinter, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael wage war against crime. Led by Master Splinter, the four turtles learn the ancient martial art of Ninjitsu, mastering skills of stealth, weapons, and fighting. They stop evildoers in all forms, whether barbaric gangs, lowlife crooks, deranged cyborgs, or even the crime syndicate The Foot, led by their archrival, The Shredder.

This is a really fun little series. Now for me I grew up on the 1980s original series, so this one is not as good as that one. That could be nostalgia talking more than anything. Because the voice acting is great, the animation looks like it came right out of the comics.

Now this series versions of all your favorite characters, well not all of them. My favorite villain of the original series was Krang, and in this series we just get a small hint at him in one episode. That is a shame. I would have loved to see Krang in this series.

This 18 Disc set includes all 155 episode of the 2003-2009 TV series run. But the really cool part is that the series finale is a TV movie entitled Turtles Forever. The 2003 Turtles encountering the 1987 Turtles, who have been transported into this future alternate reality. Now as weird as that is. It goes from weird to horrible as the 2003 Shredder joins forces with the 80's Shredder, Krang, Bebop and Rocksteady. Not the Turtles must make the Ultimate team to take down the ultimate bad guys!

The TV episodes are presented in full screen format while the TV Movie Turtles Forever is presented in widescreen format. The audio is an English Dolby Digital Stereo. The transfer of these episodes to DVD looks crisp and clean. There is no signs of damage and there is no signs of hiss or pops.

In this time companies are releasing complete series sets that include the all the discs in a tray spindle that comes out of the plastic case. Now some people hate this kind of set. Admittedly it may not be the best in the world, but I have so many of these sets and I really have no problem with them at all. To get the entire 7 season series and TV movie in the size of one humongous season set. I will take that anytime. The only downside in this set that I can truly say is that there is no episode guide. I wished there was a list of the episodes included on the disc. That would have made this set better. But it is still pretty awesome!

Now as far as bonus features. There are none. But let's be honest here, you're getting 155 episode and the TV movie finale. And when you look at the current price and calculate it. You're talking it comes down to over 30 cents and episode. You can't buy the series on a streaming service for that price. And Paramount+ is going to cost you monthly to watch this series. For physical media fans this is a totally awesome win.

So, if you love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as much as I do. This Ultimate Collection of the 2003 TV series and movie is a must own for your collection. Head over to Amazon or MovieZyng and order your copy today!
