Gay Purr-ee (1962) Blu-ray Review

Warner Archive Collection have been restoring and releasing on Blu-ray classic cartoons and animated movies. The latest animated movie to Blu-ray was the long anticipated Hey There, It's Yogi Bear. What a release it was. You can get the full review of that release here.

Now it is time for another animated film to receive the Blu-ray treatment. And what better one to receive a Blu-ray release than a film that has an all-star voice cast, featuring music legends Just Garland, Robert Goulet. Perfect for the animated musical from 1962 Gay Purr-ee

In the 1890s Mewsette (Judy Garland) and Jaune-Tom (Robert Goulet) are country cart in love. But Mewsette is tired of the country life.  Mewsette takes a train to the big city, where she encounters the slick con-cat Meowrice (Paul Frees). Will Mewsette be happy in her new life? Or will she realize that true home is in the country with Jaune Tom?

Along with the voice actors mentioned above. There are the great talents of Red Buttons (Pete's Dragon), Hermione Gingold (Bell Book and Candle), Morey Amsterdam (The Dick Van Dyke Show), Mel Blanc (The voice of Bugs Bunny) and many more included in this release.

Now some in this generation may call the animation found in this release to be dated, but I personally love the animation style of United Productions of America. Gay Purr-ee was their second animated feature film. The first being Mr. Magoo's 1001 Arabian Nights.

Gay Purr-ee has been transferred in 1080p in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HS Master Audio 2.0. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. The pictures quality is stunning! The colors are vibrant, and the picture is crisp and clean. The audio is clear as a bell. This animated feature looks great on Blu-ray.

Warner Archive Collection went beyond a nice-looking transfer to Blu-ray with this release. They added some really nice bonus features. Take a look at what is included.

* Classic Warner Bros Cartoons
  Louvre Come Back to Me (1962) Pepe Le Pew pursues a female cat into the Louvre art gallery, but while there a male cat in love with the female cat challenges Pepe to a duel.
  French Rarebit (1951) In Paris two rival chefs argue over which of their restaurants are going to serve Bugs Bunny for the dinner menu.
  For Scent-Imental Reasons (1949) Pepe Le Pew pursues a female cat in a perfume shop but didn't expect the tables to turn.
* Five Songwriter Demo Records (Audio Only)
* Original Theatrical Trailer

I really enjoyed this animated musical. This film has adult themes that for small children, they may not be able to grasp. So parents be aware. Judy Garland shines her in one of her final roles. It was sad we lost her so early. But she lives on in her films. And her voice continues to bring pleasure after all these years.

The addition of French themed classic cartoons is a great bonus. For me when Warner Archive Collection adds these classic cartoons it makes the Blu-ray release so much better. I never got a chance to go to the theaters when there were double features with cartoons, news reels and trailers. But this is as close as you can to a classic night at the movies with the family.

If you love classic animated films as much as I do. Or if you love that talents of the great Judy Garland. You need one of her final performances on film. The Blu-ray release of Gay Purr-ee is a must own for your Blu-ray collection. Head over to MovieZyng and order your copy today.
