Now Last Summer has kind of disappeared from home video for quite a while. The only way you could find it was if you were lucky enough to run across a copy at a pawnshop, yard sale or Goodwill. Well, Warner Archive Collection has rectified that by restoring and releasing this film on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
Synopsis: Set on Fire Island, the film follows three teenagers whose idyllic vacation curdles into a psychological nightmare. Perry masterfully builds tension as the trio targets the shy Rhoda, pushing boundaries of cruelty and peer pressure. Known for his keen eye for social alienation, Perry crafts a haunting coming-of-age tale that strips away the era's idealism to reveal a violent loss of innocence.
Director Frank Perry brings to the cinema a coming-of-age story like nothing that had been seen before. Barbara Hershey (The Stunt Man) and Richard Thomas (The Waltons) give unforgettable performances. What makes this film a gem is its unapologetic look at teenage life in the late 60s.
Warner Archive Collection has transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p and is presented in 1.85:1 aspect ratio. The audio track is English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. There is also the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Warner Archive has taken Last Summer and restored this film in 4K from the original camera negative. Now what results from this Blu-ray transfer is a film that is crisp and clean with no signs of damage to the print that I could see while screening this film.
