Now 12 years after Hugo's theatrical release, Martin Scorsese's family feature is receiving a 4K UltraHD release complete with a 3D version of the film in this epic box set.
Hugo Cabret is an orphan, living secretly in the walls of a Paris train station, tending to the many clocks, stealing what he needs to survive and hiding from the ruthless station inspector. But his clandestine life and precious secrets are threatened when he is caught thieving by the bitter old man who runs a toy booth at the station, and Hugo's world becomes enmeshed with that of the shop owner and his bookish granddaughter. A cryptic drawing, a treasured notebook, a mechanical man, and a hidden message from Hugo's dead father are all connected to a place where dreams are made.
The film was based on The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. Hugo is far from what we are used to seeing in a Martin Scorsese film. His films are raw, gritty and real-life tales. With Hugo, Scorsese takes the viewer on a magical fantasy journey that is such a great little adventure. Every time I see this film I discover something else in this film mystery. I am simply amazed at how good this film really is.
Martin Scorsese put together a cast that is spectacular. It includes, Asa Butterfield (The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas), Chloë Grace Moretz (Tom and Jerry, Let Me In), Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler's List), Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, The Dictator), Ray Winstone (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), Emily Mortimer (The Bookshop), Jude Law (Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows), Helen McCrory (Frankenstein), Michael Stuhlbarg (Steve Jobs), and the great Christopher Lee (The Wicker Man, The Horror of Dracula).
Arrow Video have transferred this family classic to 4K and Blu-ray. The 4k is presented in 2160p debut of the 2D version of the film. For the Blu-ray version it is in High Definition 1080p presentation of the film in 2D and 3D. The audio soundtrack is a DTS-HD 7.1. There are also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
When I watched this disc in comparison to the 2012 Paramount Blu-ray, wow this 4K has more clarity and brings so much more detail to the picture. This new release brings new life to this film. I am thoroughly blown away by how good this film looks. But a simply gorgeous looking version of this film is not all that is included in this set. Take a look a the bonus features included.
