Steel Book Review: Miami Vice (2007)

In the 80s there was one TV series that literally was a snapshot of that era. Even to this day when you re-watch the show, it instantaneously takes you back to the 80s. Yes I am talking about Miami Vice. Crockett and Tubbs took us on adventures and started fashion trends in the 80s. It was quite the show.

Still to this day people are watching Miami Vice and longing for the days of the 80s. Well, in 2006 director Michael Mann directed a movie version, just without the original cast. Instead of Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas, we got Colin Ferrell and Jamie Foxx. That is not a disparaging statement, it's just the truth.

Now it is hard to imagine that in a few years this film will be 20 years old! WOW how times flies. So Mill Creek Entertainment and Walmart have joined forces to bring physical media home video fans a deluxe edition Steel Book version of this film.

A case involving drug lords and murder in South Florida takes a personal turn for undercover detectives Sonny Crockett (Colin Farrell) and Ricardo Tubbs (Jamie Foxx). Unorthodox Crockett gets involved romantically with the Chinese-Cuban wife of a trafficker of arms and drugs, while Tubbs deals with an assault on those he loves.

The TV show was raw and gritty. It showed the dark side of life. Showing the dangers of prostitution, drugs and violence. But even with all these adult themes it never seemed too much for me to enjoy.

Well, in 2006 Michael Mann however wanted to make this version even more gritty, raw and real. This this film version is filled with profanity, some nudity and intense violence. This is by no means you Miami Vice TV show. Mann's version pays homage to the TV series, but this is not your father's Miami Vice, not by a longshot. And that could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your feelings of the original series.

The film has been transferred to Blu-ray in 1080p in widescreen format and 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The audio is a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and there is the option for English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Mill Creek Entertainment not only included the Theatrical version (2:12:10), but also the Unrated Version (2:19:14). Just be aware the unrated version amps up the language a bit. But two versions of the film is not all that is included in the Steel Book, not by a longshot. Take a look at the bonus features included in this release.

* Miami Vice Undercover: The cast, crew and former law enforcement individuals talk about the allure and challenges of undercover work, some real undercover cases, and more.

* Miami & Beyond: Shooting On Location: The cast and crew discuss the challenges and benefits of filming on location in Miami and South America, and more.

* Visualizing Miami Vice: The cast and crew discuss Michael Mann’s vision and eye for detail, the look of the film, shooting the film digitally, and more.

* Behind the Scenes Featurettes

* Gun Training

* Hatian Hotel Camera Blocking: Director Michael Mann blocks out a scene with stars Colin Farrell & Jamie Foxx.

* Mojo Race: The crew members show off the 40-foot MTI race boat, and discuss its design, and the challenges of filming on the rough sea.

* Feature Commentary with Writer/director Michael Mann.

* Theatrical Trailer

So as you can see Mill Creek Entertainment went all in for this release. They added so much on disc material that will keep fans entertained. But where this release really shine is in the quality of the Steel Book itself. The colors are so reminiscent of Miami Vice the series it is just ultra cool!

Now while I didn't enjoy the film as much as I love the TV series. For me the ultra violence sexual content and profanity took away from the film for me. But that doesn't mean someone else won't love this film. And for me if you are looking for an absolute stunning physical media release of this film. This one is the best one for you.
