Retro VHS Blu-ray Review: The Fan (1996)

When I think about obsessed fans on film one movie always comes to my mind and that is Misery! The chilling performance of Kathy Bates stays with you long after the end credits.

When I think of obsession I think Robert DeNiro could play that to a tee. So in 1996 Robert DeNiro was teamed with Wesley Snipes for a sports obsession thriller entitled "The Fan". Now the good folks at Mill Creek Entertainment are releasing this film on Blu-ray as part of their Retro VHS Blu-ray collection.

Gil Renard (Robert De Niro) is a troubled salesman who peddles knives. He is divorced and a strained relationship with his young son. In his whole there is one thing he cares about more than anything is the San Francisco Giants baseball team.

So when the San Francisco Giants pay centerfielder Bobby Rayburn (Wesley Snipes) $40 million to lead their team to the World Series, Gil Renard couldn't be happier. But when Rayburn slips into the worst slump of his career Renard stops at nothing to help Rayburn get back on track... including murder.

Robert DeNiro is known for playing over the top characters and making them so believable and at time it feels as though DeNiro doesn't have his whole heart in this role. Wesley Snipes plays the arrogant superstar to the hilt. But probably the one that stole the show in this films is John Laguizamo. He really stands out here in this film as Rayburn's agent.

Tony Scott directed some of the most iconic films in the 1980s and 90s. I'm taking Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, Days of Thunder, The Last boy Scout, True Romance, Crimson Tide and Enemy of the State. He brings his unique style to this film that keeps the audience guessing!

Now with Robert DeNiro you know what your in for. There is a huge amount of profanity and adult situation and violence. So by no means is this for the kids. But adults that loved seeing the DeNiro in Cape Fear, will probably enjoy seeing this performance. But the average film fan may not find this one a must see.

Mill Creek Entertainment have transferred this film to Blu-ray in 1080p in widescreen format 2.35:1 aspect ratio. The soundtrack is a DTS-HD 2.0 track. There is also English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

Now the transfer looks pretty good, but there does not feature a new restoration. The picture is crisp and clear and the audio is clean. There is no signs of Blu-ray artifacts. This is simply an old master from Sony Pictures. One of the best reasons to get this Blu-ray is that this is the first time this film has seen a stand alone Blu-ray release here in America.

In addition to the film getting it's first Blu-ray release it is cool that it is part of the Mill Creek Retro line. Mill Creek Entertainment's Retro Blu-ray slipcovers are simply the best on the market. They put so much work into making them look perfect. They deserve a lot of credit for that. But sadly that is the only bonus feature found on this Blu-ray. No on disc feature whatsoever.

But if you are a fan of psychological thrillers, Wesley Snipes or Robert DeNiro The Fan is one Blu-ray you will want to add to your collection. Head over to Amazon and order your copy today.
